To book a court in Halifax, compare the Canada Games Centre, Dalplex and JBTC in Bedford. To join games without assembling your own group, check East Dartmouth Community Centre, Zatzman Sportsplex or a club’s guest session.

Canada Games Centre non-members book in person on the day. At Dalplex, day-pass holders can register for racquet sports when buying the pass, subject to availability. Several community clubs are full or invite-only; check their guest rules before travelling.

Compare the access type before the price: a court booking is for your group, while a drop-in is a place in an organised session. Bring non-marking indoor court shoes.

Weekly Drop-In Schedule

These are the recurring badminton sessions in the Halifax area that a member of the public can pay for and join, as posted by the venues in August 2026. Sessions get cancelled and rescheduled, so treat this as a shortlist to phone, not a timetable.

For weeknight play, ask HBC or 902Badminton about current guest sessions, or reserve a court for your group. The August listings for King Badminton, Thursday Night Thunder and Armross were closed or at capacity.

Canada Games Centre

Annual members can reserve online through MyRec or in person up to three days ahead, from 9:00 AM. One-month members, 10-punch-pass holders and non-members book in person on the day at the Customer Service Desk. A limited number of rackets and shuttles are available to borrow.

JBTC — Nova Scotia Junior Badminton Training Centre

JBTC offers junior training and public court rental in Bedford. For a group of friends who want a court to themselves, compare its hourly rate with the public-centre day passes.

Public court rental

Booking is by phone or text only. Call or text (902) 471-6818 for availability — the online booking widget on the JBTC site currently has nothing listed, so do not plan on reserving through the website. The two weekday rate bands overlap in the afternoon, so confirm which rate applies when you call. Indoor, non-black-soled shoes are required.

Dartmouth Badminton Club

All-ages club coached by Blake Brown and Logan Coffill, both former provincial and Atlantic champions. The Saturday Open Session at Zatzman Sportsplex is the part a newcomer can realistically join. Full-time spots are taken, but the club holds back a limited number of drop-in places at $15 for the two hours, first-come, first-served. Ask on the club's Facebook group before you travel — that is where they post whether drop-in spots are open that week.

Two details that remove most of the hesitation about turning up: you do not need a Zatzman Sportsplex membership — tell the front desk you are there to play badminton and they will let you through — and the club has loaner rackets if you do not own one, so long as you say so when you arrive. The club supplies nylon shuttles; bring your own if you prefer feather. Pay cash on the day or by e-transfer to blake@dartmouthbadminton.ca.

Membership: A $30 annual club membership is required to register for either Junior Club session. It includes a DBC t-shirt, a Badminton Nova Scotia membership, and club discounts — and there is a separate session fee on top, which the club does not publish. Full-time members paid $170 for a 17-week season last year, and the club says the figure depends on how many weeks the session runs, so ask for the current number.

HBC — Halifax Badminton Community

Badminton Nova Scotia lists HBC as accepting new members and allowing drop-ins. The group plays across Halifax, Bedford and Timberlea.

The catch is the standard: BNS lists HBC as intermediate to advanced. If you are learning the game, start at the Canada Games Centre Badminton Club's beginner program or a community drop-in instead. HBC has no website and publishes no schedule or fee, so email or phone is the only way in — ask for session times, the venue that week, and the drop-in rate.

Bedford Junior Badminton Club

Juniors only — adults cannot play here. A junior club serving the Bedford and Sackville area, running September through May, so nothing is on during the summer. Canada Games Centre Badminton Club

Separate from booking a court at the Canada Games Centre, this club runs 10-week beginner programs — the clearest starting point in Halifax for someone who has never played properly. Badminton Nova Scotia lists it as active. Session dates and fees are not on the Centre's own badminton pages, so call the Centre and ask for the badminton club program specifically.

Zatzman Sportsplex

Dartmouth's main recreation centre runs its own public badminton drop-in, which is a different thing from the Dartmouth Badminton Club sessions it also hosts. You do not need to rent the gym or hold a membership — a day pass gets you in.

If you play often, the day pass is the expensive way in: a 10-punch pass is $98.00 adult or $63.00 senior, youth and student, a one-month membership is $108.00 adult, and an annual membership paid monthly is $82.00 a month — all tax included, and all include drop-in gym sports along with the pool, track and fitness centre.

East Dartmouth Community Centre

East Dartmouth’s $5 session is a low-cost option if Friday 4:00–5:30 PM fits your week. Badminton Nova Scotia lists a maximum of 24 players.

Halifax PLAYS

Halifax PLAYS’ badminton information dates from Winter 2023. Email the organisers before relying on the Saturday slot, fee or registration instructions below.

A community-organised adult drop-in at Citadel High School, run by the Halifax PLAYS non-profit alongside its other sports. What its own page describes: drop-in play on three to six courts, a maximum of 20 players per session, ages 19 and up, all skill levels, singles or doubles. Rackets are available to borrow and shuttles are provided.

• When: Saturday evenings, 5:30–7:30 PM, as posted — but that posting dates from Winter 2023
• Cost: "Around $7–10 per session" is the organisers' own wording on the same page. Ask for the current rate by email
• Capacity: 20 players per session, adjusted by demand

Halifax Sport & Social Club (HSSC)

This is not a drop-in. HSSC badminton is a season-long "Play & Social" registration at $219 per person, which buys two hours of play a week for the length of the season. You sign up as an individual — no teammate needed — and play open-gender doubles with no minimum gender requirement. Bring a racquet and indoor court shoes; HSSC provides the nets, birdies and setup.

• Fall 2026: September 25 – December 11 at Halifax Independent School, or September 25 – December 18 at the Canada Games Centre. Registration for that season ran July 14 to August 27, 2026

HSSC also runs a general drop-in sports program, but as of August 2026 it lists no dated sessions and does not confirm badminton is among them. Do not count on it.

Dalhousie University — Dalplex

Dalplex sells day passes and community memberships to non-students. Badminton requires a court reservation: one-hour slots, a maximum of four players and a booking window of up to 72 hours for eligible members and students. Day-pass and multi-visit users have shorter access windows.

Membership figures use the September 1, 2026 rates. Day-pass rates remain those effective January 1, 2026. Tax is extra.

Dalhousie’s pass policy says day-pass holders can register for racquet sports at purchase, subject to availability; multi-visit holders register on the day of the activity. Bring photo ID. Ask the desk for the available badminton slot before paying, because passes are non-refundable.

Downtown alternative — Sexton Gym. Dalhousie's Sexton campus gym takes badminton bookings through the same portal as Dalplex, and its memberships are open to community members as well as faculty and staff. Halifax Municipal Recreation Centres

Halifax Regional Municipality offers badminton through its recreation centres on a seasonal registration basis, and programs change each season. Call (902) 490-6666 or check halifax.ca recreation activities for current availability.

One quirk that catches people out. The Canada Games Centre, Zatzman Sportsplex, Cole Harbour Place and St Margaret's Centre are owned by the municipality but run by their own boards of directors, with their own registration dates. The municipality says so itself. In practice that means the badminton at the Canada Games Centre and Zatzman Sportsplex — the two biggest public options in this guide — will not show up on the municipality's own drop-in listings. Check those facilities' own sites and phone numbers directly.

Cole Harbour Place, St Margaret's Centre and Sackville Sports Stadium are worth a call if you live nearby. We could not verify any current badminton times at them in August 2026, so we are not publishing any.

Badminton Tournaments in Nova Scotia

Badminton Nova Scotia (BNS) organizes three levels of competition:

A Badminton Nova Scotia membership is required to compete. The Atlantic Series rotates between the four Atlantic provinces, but the dates move from year to year, so check badmintonns.ca/tournaments for the current schedule rather than planning around fixed months.

Bedford Junior Badminton Club serves Bedford and Sackville from September to May. For a complete beginner, the Canada Games Centre Badminton Club's 10-week beginner program is the gentlest start.
