Quick Answer: Badminton Kelowna and Thompson-Okanagan
Start with public drop-ins, then move to clubs if you want steadier partners or coaching.
Drop-ins
Best choice: Parkinson Recreation Centre or Penticton Community Centre suit casual, all-level play.
Clubs
Kelowna Badminton Club, Kamloops clubs, and Summerland fit regular players; access is membership-based or scheduled.
Campus
UBCO Open Gym or TRU drop-in works only with the right pass, membership, or student/staff status.
If you search “badminton Kelowna,” the tricky part is not whether badminton exists in the Okanagan–Thompson corridor — it is knowing which doors are actually open to visitors. Kelowna has member club access and City recreation play; Kamloops has Badminton BC Zone 2 club nights plus TRU student/staff drop-in; Penticton and Summerland add southern Okanagan options. This guide separates public drop-ins, member clubs, university gyms, coaching, and tournament pathways so you can choose the right first session before driving across the valley.

|---|---|
| Parkinson Recreation Centre | 1800 Parkinson Way, Kelowna. Hours: Mon–Fri 6am–10pm, except July/August closes 9pm; Sat–Sun 8am–5pm. City badminton uses a Register & Play format: weekly co-ed pick-up games, organized by participants and/or a City monitor, with limited space and equipment supplied if needed. Members can also use gym free-play with sport equipment; non-members may drop in for a fee, with no pre-registration required. |
| Penticton Community Centre | 325 Power Street; 250-490-2426. Winter/Spring badminton is listed Monday 12:30–2:30pm, Wednesday 12:30–2:30pm, and Saturday 11:15am–1:00pm. Players can drop in or sign up in advance to secure a spot; verify the current schedule before travelling. |
| Tournament Capital Centre | 910 McGill Road, Kamloops. Hours: Mon–Fri 5:30am–9:30pm; Sat–Sun 7:00am–8:00pm. Confirm current badminton availability on the City schedule before counting it as a drop-in option. |
Clubs and Community Groups
Badminton BC lists four Zone 2 (Thompson-Okanagan) club options for players who want more structure than a municipal drop-in:
- Kelowna Badminton Club: a member-based club with court booking through Skedda. It does not currently offer public drop-ins, but members may bring guests. Membership categories include adult, student, and junior; programming includes a Tuesday Night Ladder, Sunday Playtime, adult/junior/private coaching, junior programs, and camps.
- Kamloops Badminton Association: Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00–10:00 pm, for ages 13+ through adults. No lessons are listed.
- Kamloops Shuttlers Club: Mondays, 6:30–8:30 pm, with a family recreational focus for ages 6+.
- Summerland Badminton Club: listed for recreational play Monday–Thursday and Sunday.

University Courts in Kelowna and Kamloops
Campus gyms are useful in the Okanagan-Thompson corridor, but both verified university options have clear access gates.
UBC Okanagan Open Gym
UNIVERSITYAt UBCO Open Gym, badminton courts are first-come, first-served when not booked. Check in at the front desk with a Hangar membership or drop-in pass. The gym has room for four badminton courts and a 12 m clear ceiling, making it a strong Kelowna option when court time is available. UBCO notes the gym is on Syilx Okanagan Nation territory.
TRU Gym Drop-In Badminton
UNIVERSITYTRU lists free Sunday badminton at the TRU Gym for students and staff only. Bring your student or staff card, wear clean indoor shoes, and check the current start date and weekly schedule before going.
Lessons, Juniors, and Tournaments
If you have outgrown casual drop-in play, Kelowna Badminton Club is the clearest development hub in the corridor. The club lists adult, junior, and private coaching, plus junior programs and camps; its Tuesday Night Ladder also gives improving players a structured way to test match habits beyond open play.
For competition, use Badminton BC to follow the event calendar, provincial series such as BC Junior A/B/C, BC Open, and BC Masters, and provincial rankings. As a regional example, the Kamloops Open has included men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, with exact dates and venues changing by year. Before You Go: Booking, Shoes, and Schedule Checks

Before driving between Kelowna, Penticton, Summerland, and Kamloops, confirm the access rule for the specific court. Kelowna Badminton Club is member-based: it does not currently run public drop-ins, though members may bring guests. TRU drop-in badminton is for TRU students and staff only. UBCO Open Gym requires a Hangar membership or a drop-in pass.
- Check the current schedule: Penticton Community Centre and TRU schedules are seasonal or subject to change, so verify times before travelling.
- Bring the basics: clean indoor non-marking shoes where required, a racket if equipment is not supplied, and water.
- Plan for local rules: university gyms, city recreation programs, and clubs may handle check-in, guest access, and court sharing differently.

Which Okanagan-Thompson Badminton Option Should You Choose?
- Lowest cost: Start with campus access if you are eligible — TRU is the clearest fit for students and staff. Otherwise, look at public recreation options such as Parkinson Recreation Centre or Penticton Community Centre.
- Social / find partners: Choose municipal drop-ins and Register & Play formats first. They are built around casual shared play rather than fixed training groups.
- Competitive pathway: Prioritize dedicated clubs: Kelowna Badminton Club, Kamloops Badminton Association, Kamloops Shuttlers Club, and Summerland Badminton Club, then follow Badminton BC events for Zone 2 progression.
- Family or junior: Look at clubs with junior or family programming first, especially Kelowna Badminton Club and Kamloops Shuttlers Club.
- Beginner: Pick public recreation or coached club programming before committing to membership.
