Where to Play Badminton in Surrey and Burnaby — Courts, Clubs, and Drop-Ins

For a dedicated court you can book with friends, start with Surrey’s Smash Champs, Surrey Badminton Club or Court Birdies. Burnaby’s municipal options are scheduled gym drop-ins at Bonsor, Edmonds, Christine Sinclair, Willingdon and Rosemary Brown.

Burnaby’s Be Active day pass is $7.40 for adults 26–64, $5.55 for ages 15–25 and 65+, and $3.70 for ages 5–14, before tax. The pass price and a session’s age restrictions are separate: check both before reserving.

The old Cameron complex is closed, and the temporary Lougheed location has no badminton gym. For Burnaby sessions, use the current daily activities schedule; fall timetables replace the summer listings in early September.

Rates and venue entries checked in August 2026, with the seasonal updates noted below. Confirm your chosen session and price with the venue before travelling.

Compare courts and drop-ins

The last column is the one most guides leave out. Half the venues here take no drop-in at all: the clubs want an email first, Surrey Badminton Club and ERSC rent whole courts to groups, and the City sessions need you to sign up ahead and fit the right age band.

Burnaby prices below apply from September 1, 2026. Check the Be Active rates and the current activity schedule before travelling.

Where Can You Rent a Badminton Court in Surrey?

Surrey has three private badminton facilities in this guide, and they work in three different ways. Smash Champs is the one a solo player wants: buy a one-day membership at reception and pay by the hour. Court Birdies takes walk-ups and online bookings at an hourly court rate. Surrey Badminton Club rents whole courts only — bring your playing group and confirm the booking rules.

Surrey's largest dedicated badminton facility, with 14 purpose-built courts, an on-site pro shop, a fitness gym and a member's lounge. It is also the best walk-up answer in Surrey, which its own wording hides: you need a membership, but the cheapest membership is a one-day pass.

What a one-off visit costs: the listed adult day membership is $7.50 and an evening session is $5/hour, so two hours is $17.50 before tax and the separate first-visit bracelet fee. The $30 annual membership equals four $7.50 day memberships; it saves on that component from the fifth visit, with hourly fees still charged.

Hourly drop-in fees on top of the membership: EARLY BIRD $2.50 (the 8–10 AM slots), YOUTH 13–18 or STUDENT 19–25 with ID $3.00, FAMILY $3.00 (an adult 19+ with children 18 and under), VALUE $3.50 (weekday 10 AM–4 PM), SENIOR 65+ $3.50, and OPEN or evening ADULT $5.00. A Premium Membership with full amenities is a separate, much pricier tier at $1,500/year for an adult; you do not need it to play. All rates are plus tax.

Sessions run from 8 AM to 11 PM every day, weekends included — this is not a weekday-daytime programme. Weekdays add a VALUE drop-in from 10 AM to 4 PM and a Monday social mixer 8–11 PM; Sunday has a competitive singles ladder 8–10 PM.

Before your first visit: there is a one-off $5.00 non-refundable set-up fee for the access bracelet (replacements $15.00), you must check in at reception, have a full-face photo taken and sign a waiver. Smash Champs flags its shoe policy as different from the usual badminton club rules, so read the terms rather than assuming. Court rental is booked through the member portal and no rental rate is published publicly — email info@smashchamps.com. Rentals cap at 8 people per court and everyone on court must be a member.

Surrey Badminton Club

No drop-in here. The club publishes no social or drop-in session at all. Access is by renting a whole court by email or phone, plus lessons and camps. A solo player who turns up will not get a game — bring your group, or play somewhere else on this page.

$20/hr non-prime (weekdays 10 AM–4 PM) and $28/hr prime (weekdays 4–11 PM, and all day at weekends and on holidays, 7 AM–11 PM). Racquet rental costs $5/hr and shoe rental costs $5/hr, so you can arrive empty-handed. Booking is by email or phone; there is no online booking engine. Rates have been in effect since 1 September 2025 and the club notes they may change without notice.

Head coach Kiran Bogavelli: three-time BC Provincial Champion, Capilano University Hall of Famer, 20+ years coaching experience. Private lessons $90/hr with the head coach ($100 semi-private for two, $120 for three), or $75/hr with club coaches ($85 for two, $100 for three), booked through the coaching address above. The 2026 Fall group-lesson term runs 8 September to 18 December and registration is open; a skill assessment is required for everything above beginner level, classes need a minimum of four participants to run, and registration is only complete once both the form and payment are in.

Shoe policy: non-marking indoor court shoes only. Bare feet, flip-flops, street shoes and dark soles are all refused. Water only in playing areas, and no refunds on used court rentals.

Court Birdies Badminton Centre

Surrey's newest dedicated facility, opened in 2026 with 4 synthetic courts. No membership is required — walk up or book a slot online, up to 6 players per court.

The $30/hour rate has a condition attached. It applies only Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Everything else — weekday mornings from 6 AM, weekday evenings from 5 PM, and the whole weekend — is $35/hour. If you play evenings or weekends, $35 is the number that matters.

Cancel free up to two hours ahead; after that you get 50% as credit toward your next booking. Parking is covered and on-site, free for members and $3 flat for guests. Open-play match-up nights run midweek and there is a "Comeback Crew" beginner session on Wednesday evenings, but the site gives conflicting days, so confirm when you book. Rackets are available to rent — the published price contradicts itself, so call 778-288-9543 to confirm the rental fee. Memberships exist but are optional and unpriced online; call for rates. About a 10-minute drive from Surrey Central SkyTrain.

Where Can You Play Badminton in Burnaby?

Burnaby’s municipal badminton options are scheduled gym drop-ins. The old Cameron Recreation Complex is closed, and badminton did not move to the temporary Lougheed location. Check Christine Sinclair, Willingdon, Bonsor, Edmonds or Rosemary Brown. For a dedicated court rental, compare Surrey and Richmond facilities below.

Session times at every Burnaby centre come from seasonal schedules that turn over in early September and again at the end of December. The pattern below is stable; the exact times are not, so check the daily activities schedule before you go.

More badminton than any other City of Burnaby facility. Sessions run most days across three gyms, and the one genuinely late option in the Burnaby system is here: Adult badminton Monday 8:10–10:10 PM. There is also a dedicated 65+ badminton block Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Check the individual session: the autumn timetable changes the mix of Adult and All Ages blocks. Admission price bands do not establish session eligibility; open the actual activity’s age requirements before booking.

Bonsor Recreation Complex

The most transit-accessible badminton in the region — a short walk from Metrotown SkyTrain. Badminton runs as scheduled gym drop-in in Gyms 1, 2 and 3, with All Ages sessions on weekday mornings, afternoons and Saturday mornings, and Adult sessions on Monday and Sunday evenings and Wednesday late afternoon. Evenings and weekends are covered, so this is not a daytime-only programme. Bonsor uses only two bands, All Ages and Adult; there is no 65+ block here.

Pay the standard Be Active day-pass rate — $7.40 adult from 1 September 2026, plus tax. One thing worth knowing: Bonsor's bookable racquet courts are squash courts. Badminton is the gym drop-in, not a court you reserve by the hour.

Burnaby's second-busiest municipal badminton venue and the one with the most unusual slots. The Wednesday 13+ session, 8–9:30 PM, is the only late-evening teen-and-up badminton anywhere in the Burnaby system. It is also the only Burnaby centre running Children's Badminton with Adult blocks — Wednesday afternoons and Saturday late mornings — which makes it the answer for a parent searching for badminton for kids in Burnaby.

The autumn timetable changes several weekday blocks. Check the current session time and age requirements separately from the Be Active admission category.

Willingdon Community Centre

Small, but it is the cheapest way into badminton for a young child: the evening sessions are open from age six, with children aged 6–12 required to have a participating adult on court with them. From September those run Monday 7:30–8:45 PM and Thursday 6:15–8:15 PM.

The adult sessions here are the weekday-daytime trap. Willingdon's Adult badminton is Monday and Wednesday 12:30–2:30 PM only — no evening or weekend adult slot at all. Willingdon also cancels individual dates around statutory holidays more often than the other centres, so confirm the date you are planning around.

Rosemary Brown Recreation Centre

Burnaby's newest recreation centre. Badminton is listed for 18 years and up plus an All Ages band, as staff-supervised casual game play. The City's own description is honest about what it is: nets are provided but you bring your own racquets and shuttles, the court is marked with pickleball lines, and the sessions are pitched at beginner and recreational players. It is not a venue for a competitive game.

Families get more here than badminton alone: a Family Sport drop-in (ages 5–12 with an adult 16+, maximum three children per adult) and a Youth Sport drop-in (8–17) both include badminton, though on a shared floor with other sports rather than as dedicated badminton. Session times did not publish reliably in the public schedule — call 604-421-3200 rather than planning from the website.

Nearby: Richmond Facilities

• ERSC Badminton (140-4551 No. 3 Road, Richmond, BC V6X 2C3), 12 BWF-certified courts on Yonex club-grade mats over sprung wood. Open Mon–Fri 10 AM–11 PM, Sat 9 AM–11 PM, Sun 9 AM–10 PM. $30/hr on weekdays before 5 PM; $36/hr after 5 PM, at weekends and on statutory holidays. Bulk packages: $1,080 for 40 off-peak hours ($27/hr) or $1,280 for 40 peak hours ($32/hr). There is no drop-in and no online booking — you rent a whole court by phone on 604-285-5521, so arrange a playing group or an organiser’s session. Cancellation needs 48 hours' notice, or 72 hours for more than two courts; late cancellations are charged in full. Indoor non-marking court shoes only, explicitly no basketball or tennis shoes; shoe rental $2.
• Drive Badminton Centre (138-4551 No. 3 Road, Richmond), in the same building as ERSC. Badminton BC lists it as open Mon–Sun 9 AM to 1 AM for ages 10 to 65+, which is the latest closing time of any venue in this guide. We could not confirm its hourly rate or whether it accepts walk-ins from any current source — call 604-285-2638 to confirm rates and walk-in policy before you travel.

Drop-In Badminton in Surrey and Burnaby

City recreation centres are the cheapest way to play: $2.50–$7.75 per visit in Surrey and $3.70–$7.40 in Burnaby from 1 September 2026. Both cities run doubles with player rotation. Neither has a residency requirement or a resident/non-resident price split for drop-in — the one exception in each city is a summer pass for children and youth.

The condition that catches people out is the age band, not the price. Neither city runs a generic "badminton drop-in": every session is labelled for a specific age group, and turning up to the wrong one means you do not get on court. See Age Bands: Which Sessions Can You Actually Join? below.

City of Surrey Recreation Centres

Eight City facilities run badminton, and it sits in the gym drop-in schedule rather than on any badminton-specific page. Newton runs the most badminton in Surrey: 13+ sessions from 6:30 AM five mornings a week, adult evening sessions most nights, and a daily seniors block. Guildford runs 13+ badminton from 6:30 AM most days including both weekend days, and Chuck Bailey is the one to know if you are coming by SkyTrain. Fleetwood Community Centre appears in the same schedule but runs no badminton — table tennis and pickleball only.

Drop-in prices are the same at all eight. The article-standard adult figure is only part of the picture — the swipe passes are where a regular player saves real money. A 20-visit adult swipe pass at $124 works out at $6.20 a visit against $7.75 at the door, and it is valid for two years.

If you play several times a week, a Recreation Surrey pass covers unlimited drop-in at every City facility: $581.50/year or $79.50/month for an adult 19–59, $436.25 / $59.75 for a student, $290.75 / $39.75 for a child or youth, $436.00 / $59.75 at 60–69 and $174.50 / $24.00 at 70+. No contracts or sign-up fees; cancel any time for a $5 withdrawal fee. Surrey also runs a Leisure Access Program that discounts admission for residents in financial need.

How to book, and the rules that catch first-timers. Gym drop-in opens for sign-up 72 hours in advance at surrey.ca, by phone on 604-501-5100 (Mon–Fri 8:30 AM–4:30 PM), or in person. You need a free Recreation Passcard, and every City facility asks to see it before you go in. Drop-in is included in a Recreation Surrey pass. Arrive on time: you get a 10-minute grace period after the start, after which your reserved spot goes to the waitlist. Bring your own racquet — the City says only that limited equipment may be available to borrow. Proper sport footwear is required, no sandals or open toes, no food, no spectators, and water only in a non-breakable bottle with a secure lid.

Surrey publishes its gym drop-in schedule by season, and each one expires — the summer schedule runs to 7 September 2026, with a fall schedule replacing it. Treat the session patterns above as typical rather than fixed and open the current drop-in schedule before you go.

City of Burnaby Recreation Centres

Five Burnaby centres run badminton: Bonsor (Metrotown), Edmonds, Christine Sinclair (Kensington), Willingdon and Rosemary Brown. Charles Rummel, Eileen Dailly, the Kensington Complex and Wesburn have none, and the temporary Cameron centre in The City of Lougheed mall has no gym at all.

The Be Active prices below apply from September 1, 2026. Adult admission starts at age 26, while the youth rate covers ages 15–25. Children under five enter free. All figures are before tax.

A 10-visit pass at $66.60 is $6.66 a visit against $7.40 at the door, it never expires until used, and it transfers to anyone in the same age band. One quirk: if you use Reserve In Advance, you pay the drop-in rate when you book and get it refunded at the front desk on the day, with a punch taken off the pass. For a regular player the $46.60 monthly recurring pass, cancellable any time with no fee, is the better deal. Annual passes are not refundable and no Be Active pass can be suspended or put on hold.

Residency: the listed standard admission prices do not use a non-resident surcharge. Burnaby’s current gym booking guidance gives residents access at 10 am two days ahead and other users at 10 am one day ahead. The summer youth pass described in the earlier listing has expired.

Age Bands: Which Sessions Can You Actually Join?

This is the condition that sends people home without a game, and almost nobody publishes it. Neither city runs a plain "badminton drop-in" — every session carries an age label, and the labels do not mean what you would assume.

Surrey runs six bands, and a lone adult can use only two

Surrey's gym drop-in schedule uses six named badminton bands. Four of the six are unusable if you are turning up on your own.

So if you are an adult arriving alone, the only two sessions open to you are Adult and 13+. A Family or Children with Adult session is not a session you can join without bringing a child, and Seniors Services needs a separate membership on top of the drop-in fee. Check the band on the schedule before you book, not just the time.

Burnaby admission bands and session eligibility are separate

For Be Active admission, Adult is 26–64 and Youth is 15–25. These are price bands; the individual badminton activity sets its own eligibility.

• A 22-year-old pays the youth rate — $5.55 rather than $7.40 from 1 September 2026. If you are a university student in Burnaby you have been overpaying if you assumed you were an adult.
• A 22-year-old must check the activity’s age range. Paying the youth admission rate does not by itself bar someone from an Adult-labelled session.
• Children under five play free, and Willingdon's evening sessions take children from age six as long as a participating adult is on court with them up to age 12.

Surrey does not use the same boundaries: its Adult band starts at 19 and its price bands run Child/Youth 2–18, Student, Adult 19–59, Senior 60–69 and Senior 70+. A 22-year-old is an adult in Surrey and a youth in Burnaby, in the same week, for the same sport.

Badminton Clubs in Surrey and Burnaby

Every club below is in Surrey — Badminton BC lists no registered club in Burnaby at all, in either the Fraser River or the Vancouver-Coastal zone. None of these clubs is a walk-in venue. They meet in school gyms on fixed nights, none publishes a rate, and every one of them expects an email or a phone call before you turn up.

Email before you go. Badminton BC lists the two school venues and weekend days above, with the note that "times and ages vary at both locations". The society's own site publishes no schedule, no venue list and no rates, so there is no session you can simply show up to. It is a society and tournament organiser as much as a place to play.

1,000+ players enrolled and $83,000 raised across five events. It runs the White Rock Badminton Tournament, whose fourth annual edition ran 20–22 June 2026; the next edition needs an organizer announcement. Youth development and girls' programs.

The drop-in exists but nothing about it is published. The club's drop-in page gives no schedule, no age limits and no price, so you cannot plan a visit from the website — call 778-776-5563 or 604-283-9785 to ask when it runs and what it costs. The Fall 2026 lesson term is published: North Surrey runs Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons from 8 September to 12 December, and South Surrey runs Monday and Thursday nights from 10 September to 14 December. Rates are not published for lessons either.

Sunday Epic Badminton Group (Richmond, not Burnaby)

Plays at Epic Racquet Sports Club, 4551 No. 3 Road unit 140, Richmond · Meetup

Sundays 6–8 PM and Fridays from 7 PM · $17 per session · Mixed doubles · beginner to intermediate

This group is often listed as a Burnaby option. It is not — it plays in Richmond, at the same ERSC building listed above. It is worth the drive anyway: 466 members, 4.8 stars, and more than a hundred sessions on the calendar, which makes it one of the healthiest badminton meetups in the region.

$17 covers the whole two hours including court fees and birdies, which is why it is good value rather than merely cheap. The level is stated as beginner to intermediate, the format is mixed doubles and no partner is needed. Two things to get right: payment is by e-transfer to the organiser before you play, not cash at the door, and there is a 48-hour cancellation policy that is enforced — late cancellations and no-shows are still charged. Sign-ups, player lists and court numbers run through a WhatsApp group.

New Westminster gives residents earlier registration: two days ahead for residents and one day for others. Burnaby also lists resident priority, so check the chosen municipality’s booking window.

Do not rely on the Meetup group here. The New Westminster Badminton Group's page is still online, but it has no upcoming events and has not run a session since 1 March 2026, and its last few meetups drew between one and seven players. Book the City's own drop-in instead.

Where Can You Get Badminton Lessons and Coaching?

Four coaching programmes in this guide publish enough detail to be useful. The condition that catches people out is at Smash Champs: an active membership is required to take part in any activity there, including lessons run by third-party coaches. So a $90 private lesson at Smash Champs is really $90 plus a membership — cheapest route, the $7.50 one-day Play Membership, or $30 for the year.

Two coaching listings that circulate widely for this area no longer check out. ClearOne has no Port Kells or Surrey location — its Lower Mainland site is in Richmond, and the old Port Kells page is offline. And Wing's Richmond number, 604-247-5952, is the one most guides print for South Surrey; the South Surrey number is the one in the table above.

Badminton Tournaments in Surrey

Surrey has hosted Badminton BC junior and open provincial events. For the next edition, check the sanctioned event calendar for the actual host city, age group and entry deadline. Nearby Richmond also hosts events; do not assume an annual tournament will return to the same venue.

South Surrey Badminton Society also organizes community tournaments, including the White Rock Badminton Tournament. Its fourth edition ran June 20–22, 2026; wait for an organizer announcement before planning the next one. Use our tournament calendar to filter provincial events by location and level.

To enter a sanctioned event you need a Badminton BC membership. The 2026-27 season runs 1 June to 31 May, and the totals below include the Badminton Canada licence. If you are entering a single tournament, the Single Event category at $45 is the one you want — you do not need the $90 Provincial membership for one weekend.

Officials pay $15 and coaches $80. Tournament entry fees are charged separately by each event.

How to Choose Where to Play

• If you are on your own, go to Smash Champs or Court Birdies. They are the only two dedicated Surrey facilities a single player can use — $7.50 plus $2.50–$5.00 an hour at Smash Champs, $30–$35 an hour at Court Birdies. Surrey Badminton Club and ERSC rent whole courts and take no drop-in.
• If you have four players, private rental wins on price. Surrey Badminton Club at $20/hour on a weekday between 10 AM and 4 PM is $5 per person per hour — but only if all four of you turn up, since there is no way to join an existing group there.
• If you want transit access, start in Burnaby. Bonsor is a short walk from Metrotown SkyTrain, and Chuck Bailey in Whalley is the Surrey rec centre nearest the SkyTrain. Most private Surrey clubs need a car or a bus.
• If price matters, check City rec first — and check the age band. Both cities are cheaper than private rental, but you must register ahead and the session has to match your age. Regulars should buy a pass: Surrey's 20-visit swipe is $6.20 a visit, Burnaby's monthly recurring is $46.60 and cancels any time.
• If you are booking for kids, compare ages as well as coaching. Wing's takes juniors from age 6 in banded blocks, Fleetwood runs children's programmes and camps across four gyms, and Surrey Badminton Club coaches from age 7.
