Where to Play Badminton in Victoria BC – Clubs, Drop-Ins, and Courts

Badminton in Greater Victoria is spread across community halls, school gyms and recreation centres. For social doubles, compare Brentwood Bay, Colwood and Cordova Bay. For a court reserved for your own group, check Cedar Hill, Henderson or Cordova Bay.

The weekly grid separates sessions by day, level and location. Book recreation-centre programs through the centre and community sessions through the named organiser. Saanich single admission is now $8 for adults and $7.25 for older adults 60+ and students 19+, taxes included, effective September 1, 2026.

Badminton Victoria — The Region's Hub

Badminton Victoria coordinates programs across Lower Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. It is a useful contact for junior development, adult coaching and community groups.

Book sessions in recreation centres through the centre. For community halls and school groups, contact the organiser listed below or email info@badmintonvictoria.com.

The regional “where to play” page was unavailable on September 6, 2026. Use the named organisers and venue schedules to confirm the August community listings below. Saanich’s own September prices have been updated here.

Sessions and bookings by day

Use this grid to compare days, neighbourhoods and access types. It includes community drop-ins, court rentals and registered sessions; read the condition column before travelling. Community times come from the August 2026 listings, with the September Saanich prices and UVic program correction noted below.

For a first visit, choose a session that explicitly accepts your level. Several community groups require a phone call, text or advance registration even when described as drop-in.

Two things this grid deliberately leaves out. Seasons are not drop-ins: the Victoria Sport & Social Club's Monday evenings at G.R. Pearkes and Tuesday evenings at Royal Oak Middle School are twelve-week registered leagues at $129–$189, covered in Victoria Sport & Social Club (VSSC). Nor are the Saanich junior classes, which are registered courses booked through Saanich RecOnline.

The seasonal listings place Panorama’s Monday return on September 14 and Commonwealth Place’s Wednesday daytime session on September 23. UVic’s specific badminton program runs Sundays September 13–November 29 at McKinnon Gym; the general recreation term dates do not describe that course.

Saanich Recreation Centres — Drop-In Badminton

Saanich’s racquet sports page directs badminton court rentals to Cedar Hill and reserved drop-in play to Saanich Commonwealth Place. Henderson Recreation Centre is operated separately by Oak Bay.

How the Saanich drop-in system works: sessions are reserved drop-in, so you book a space online from 7:30am, seven calendar days ahead, and pay with a Saanich Access Pass or a single admission. Minimum age is 16. You bring your own racquet; birdies are provided. Two conditions worth knowing before you book — no credits or refunds are issued for reserved drop-ins, and these are co-ed community sessions "often coordinated by a facilitator but not intended to be instructional", so a beginner should not expect coaching. Evening sessions fill: the Wednesday evening slot at Commonwealth Place was showing zero openings when we checked. Set a 7:30am alarm seven days out.

Drop-In Pricing (All Saanich Centres)

These are Saanich’s admission rates effective September 1, 2026, taxes included. Session age limits are separate from admission categories.

Ten adult visits cost $72, or $7.20 each. A one-month Access Pass is $68.90; a continuous pass costs that for the first month and $46.40 for later months. Compared with the 10-visit rate, the continuous price becomes cheaper at seven visits in a later month. Count the pool, gym and other included activities you actually use.

Cedar Hill Recreation Centre

Cedar Hill offers three bookable badminton courts. Saanich lists it for court rental only. The community sessions in the grid are separate August listings; phone to confirm whether they are running and which admission rate applies.

The posted rental windows are Sundays 9am–3pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays 6–7:30pm. Online booking opens two days ahead at 7:30am. A listing in the timetable does not guarantee a vacant court.

The Sunday 4–6pm community listing accepts families. Phone 250-475-7121 to confirm it and ask which rate applies to your group. The municipal admission table is a reference price, not confirmation of a volunteer group’s fee.

Cedar Hill Recreation Centre sits in the District of Saanich, about 10 minutes from downtown Victoria and 10 from UVic. It is not in Central Saanich, which is the Brentwood Bay and Saanichton area roughly 20 km further north.

Henderson Recreation Centre

Henderson is an Oak Bay facility near UVic. The August regional listings show two evening sessions and a Friday afternoon slot. Confirm current admission and rental prices with the centre.

Saanich Commonwealth Place

The only Saanich centre with reserved drop-in badminton, and the home of the junior programs. Everything here happens on a Wednesday.

• Wednesday evening, all levels 16+ — Badminton Victoria lists it at 7:30–10:00pm, Saanich's own reserved drop-in listing at 8:00–10:00pm. $7.25–$8.00 Saanich admission. It was showing zero openings when we checked, so book it the moment reservations open at 7:30am seven days ahead.
• Wednesday 1:30–3:00pm, all levels 55+ — the quiet option, and the easiest session in the region to actually get into.
• Wednesday 2:30–4:00pm, daytime drop-in 16+ — a seasonal listing running September 23 to December 23, 2026, with plenty of space. It is weekday daytime, so it only suits shift workers, students and retirees, and it stops at Christmas.
• Junior programs — Beginner 6–12 on Wednesdays 4:00–5:00pm and Intermediate 11–16 on Wednesdays 5:00–6:00pm. Both autumn intakes were full when we checked.

G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre

Pearkes hosts a registered VSSC badminton season. No municipal badminton drop-in was listed in the August research; check the current centre schedule before planning a walk-in visit.

Gordon Head Recreation Centre and Gordon Head Middle School

Two buildings, easily confused, and the badminton is not in the one with "Recreation Centre" in its name. Gordon Head Recreation Centre itself runs no badminton — nothing appears in Saanich's live schedule. The badminton is at Gordon Head Middle School, Tuesdays 6:30–8:30pm, intermediate level, listed by Badminton Victoria at $10 with the note "all registration through Gordon Head Rec Centre, drop ins welcome".

Our two sources disagree about who that session is for: Saanich's registration system shows the Tuesday Gordon Head Middle School slot as a registered Intermediate 11–16 junior program that is full for autumn 2026, while Badminton Victoria advertises it as an adult drop-in. Phone 250-475-7100 before you go — do not assume you can walk in.

Brentwood Bay Badminton

Brentwood Bay Community Hall’s August listings include feather-shuttle sessions Monday to Friday for adults 18+. Tuesday and Thursday run 7:30–10:30pm; Monday and Wednesday run 8–10pm. Levels differ by night, and Friday requires a text to confirm.

If you are new to the venue, the Tuesday or Thursday intermediate/recreational nights are the ones to start with: three hours, all-welcome level, and the same organiser both nights.

Cordova Bay Community Club

Cordova Bay Community Club has 3 badminton courts and community sessions using feather or nylon shuttles. Use the CourtReserve portal for court and session reservations. Check the chosen group’s level and payment rules separately.

The $25 annual membership saves $7/hour on court rental and pays for itself after 4 hours, and the discount is not the only reason to buy it. Non-members can book only one court per day and only 48 hours ahead; members get two courts a day and a 72-hour window — both capped at 7 courts a week. If you want two courts for a group, the membership is a requirement rather than a saving. Cancel more than 12 hours ahead for a clean refund; inside 12 hours there is none. Non-marking court shoes are a stated club policy. The $18/hour member rate is the prime-time figure, with cheaper non-prime hours.

The drop-in groups and who to ask

Badminton Victoria's calendar names the coordinators the club's own site does not:

• Monday 8:00–10:30pm — competitive ladder, feather, $9 or $11. Rob Oldfield 250-479-2800 or 250-812-0126. A two-and-a-half-hour evening ladder session.
• Monday 10:00am–1:00pm — the seniors group, all three courts, running weekly well into next year. Weekday daytime.
• Tuesday 8:00–11:00pm — intermediate competitive doubles, feather, $9. Carol Burnett 250-658-5865.
• Wednesday 8:00–10:00pm — intermediate/advanced mixed doubles, feather, $9–$11. You must bring a partner. Rob Oldfield 250-479-2800.

Register for a session by clicking through on CourtReserve; the fee itself is paid to the coordinator on the night. The club publishes no drop-in prices of its own, so the figures above come from Badminton Victoria's listings — confirm with the coordinator when you register.

Colwood Badminton Club

Friday night feather-shuttle doubles at $7 per person, in the Colwood Church gym on a three-court setup. The club raised the fee from $5 to $7 on June 5, 2026, so ignore any $5 figure you find elsewhere, including in earlier versions of this guide. Sign-up is required in advance: a Google Sheet opens each Thursday for that week's session.

Colwood’s $7 for 2.5 hours works out to $2.80 an hour. Metchosin’s women’s session has a lower $5 entry price, while John Stubbs is listed at $6. Compare eligibility, travel and session length alongside the fee.

How the sign-up works: the sheet opens Thursday and you may add one to four people, only if you are committed to attending — the club asks for no place-holding, and posts the confirmed list on the Friday. Play is ad-hoc doubles, pairings decided by spinning a racket, with occasional singles when numbers are low. Check the website before attending, as the church occasionally cancels for special events and there are rare weeks when no organiser is available. Note that the club's announcements page still leads with a cancellation notice from February, so read the date on anything you find there.

The club also says the sign-up sheet is a response to demand rather than a permanent fixture: if attendance falls it will return to pure drop-in.

Victoria Sport & Social Club (VSSC)

The VSSC runs two adult badminton programmes, on two nights, in two different buildings: a Monday Play & Social at G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre and a Tuesday league at Royal Oak Middle School. Both are full-season registrations, not drop-ins — you are buying twelve weeks, so budget $129 to $189 rather than the price of a night out.

The published autumn registration deadline was August 27, 2026. Check the current league listings for late availability or the next intake.

You can register solo or with a partner; individual registrants are placed on teams by VSSC, which makes this the easiest option if you are new to Victoria and do not know anyone who plays. VSSC staff handle the league structure, schedules and setup. You are required to bring your own racquet, and indoor court shoes are expected; the current Victoria page no longer promises birdies, so ask before the first night. Other Drop-In Options

The West Shore and Sooke listings below offer alternatives to the Colwood club. Esquimalt Recreation Centre is included with an unconfirmed badminton status so it is not mistaken for a scheduled drop-in.

John Stubbs Memorial School (West Shore)

Run by Westshore Parks & Recreation in the school gym: Thursdays 8:00–10:00pm, intermediate level, ages 16+, $6, on nylon shuttles. Cheaper than Colwood and on a different night, so the two do not compete for the same evening.

A women’s all-levels session is listed on Thursdays 7:00–9:00pm for $5. Contact the local organiser to confirm the location and current season.

Journey Middle School (Sooke)

Tuesdays 7:30–9:30pm, all ages, $7.50, on nylon shuttles, with doubles, singles and mixed all played. Bring your own racquet. Worth knowing if you are out past Langford and do not want the drive into Saanich.

Panorama Recreation (Sidney / North Saanich)

Panorama Recreation runs a real weekly indoor badminton drop-in — Mondays 7:30–9:30pm, ages 12+, starting September 14, 2026 — but not in the Panorama Recreation Centre building. Its September schedule places badminton at Greenglade Community Centre or North Saanich Middle School, so check which site before you set off. Sessions at North Saanich Middle School require a reservation because it is an off-site location; elsewhere, online booking is requested and drop-in is welcome if there is space.

Recreational-level play, beginners to advanced welcome, birdies provided. Loaner racquets are available — from reception at Panorama Recreation Centre, and from the program monitors at North Saanich Middle School — which makes this one of the few places in the region you can try badminton without owning anything.

Badminton carries no special fee, so Panorama's regular drop-in rates apply and Active Passes are accepted: $7.50 for ages 19–59, $5.95 for 60+, $4.00 for ages 6–18, free under 6, and $15.00 for a family. Ten adult visits cost $67.50. Badminton Victoria's calendar quotes lower figures for this session; Panorama's own rate card is the one that applies at the door.

Panorama also runs free open-court activities at the Jumpstart Multi Sport Court and the Centennial Park Sport Box, all ages, dawn to dusk, first come first served. The sports it names are pickleball, basketball, lacrosse and ball hockey — badminton is not listed, so phone 250-656-7271 before counting on an outdoor net.

Esquimalt Recreation Centre — check first

No badminton session was found in Esquimalt Recreation Centre’s August listings. Check the centre’s current schedule or phone before travelling; the building name alone does not establish badminton access.

Further afield on the same Badminton Victoria calendar, and worth knowing if you are on the ferry route: Chemainus Secondary School runs a Wednesday session at $4, and Gulf Islands Secondary School on Salt Spring runs Thursday and Sunday sessions at $3.

Coaching and Private Lessons

Badminton Victoria

Badminton Victoria is the route to coaching in the region: it employs the coaching staff behind the junior pathway and the adult lessons at Brentwood Bay. It publishes no lesson rate card and no phone number, so email is the only way to ask about private or small-group instruction, coach availability and what a lesson includes.

Sessions held inside a recreation centre are booked through that centre rather than through Badminton Victoria — that is the organisation's own rule, and it saves a round of emails.

Adult Competitive Lessons

Technique-focused coaching for adults 18+ at Brentwood Bay Community Hall — shot technique, footwork patterns and tactical awareness rather than physical drilling. It is a fixed weekly slot, Thursdays 5:00–7:00pm, at $15 as a drop-in or $125 for a 10-punch pass. The recreational drop-in follows straight after it at 7:30pm, so you can take the lesson and stay to play.

Badminton Lessons for Kids in Victoria — Junior Programs

There are two separate junior ladders in Greater Victoria, run by different organisations and booked in different places. Badminton Victoria runs the development pathway that leads to provincial competition; Saanich runs its own recreational junior classes at the rec centres and at two middle schools. Start with whichever matches your child, but know that they are not the same programme.

Badminton Victoria's development pathway

Beginner Level I is genuinely a starting point: ages 6+, minimal to no experience expected, no equipment necessary, and the stated priority is that the children enjoy it. Junior Competitive and above require approval from the coaching staff before a child attends a practice. The age thresholds above the beginner tiers are not currently restated on Badminton Victoria's page, so treat them as a guide and ask where your child fits. No prices are published — contact info@badmintonvictoria.com for registration and fees, and remember that anything held in a rec centre is booked through the rec centre.

Saanich's junior classes — book early, they sell out

Saanich runs its own badminton ladder for children, and when we checked the autumn 2026 intake almost every session was already full. Registration is through Saanich RecOnline, not Badminton Victoria, and fees are shown per programme rather than published as a rate card, so check the fee details there or phone the centre. Do not wait for term to start.

• Adult and Child 8+ — Colquitz Middle School, Sundays 11:30am and 12:45pm. A parent-and-child format, and the friendliest way in for a family. The September intakes were full; the November ones had a handful of spaces left.
• Beginner 6–12 — Saanich Commonwealth Place, Wednesdays 4:00–5:00pm. Full for autumn.
• Beginner 7–13 and Novice 8–14 — Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, Thursdays 5:00–6:00pm and 6:00–7:00pm. Both full for autumn.
• Intermediate 11–16 — Saanich Commonwealth Place, Wednesdays 5:00–6:00pm, and Gordon Head Middle School, Tuesdays 6:30–8:30pm. Both full for autumn.

Note that Colquitz Middle School and Gordon Head Middle School are school gyms, not recreation centres — in particular, Gordon Head Middle School is a different building from Gordon Head Recreation Centre. Phone 250-475-5400 (Pearkes, for Colquitz) or 250-475-7100 (Gordon Head) if you need to confirm which door to use.

UVic badminton — registered play

UVic’s specific Badminton Social Play listing places the autumn program at McKinnon Gym, Sundays 3:00–6:00pm, September 13–November 29, 2026, for $80. The general racquet-sports page also refers to CARSA, so use the program’s own location when registering.

The program welcomes students and community members, is beginner friendly and accepts ages 15+. Racquet-sport programs are charged separately from Vikes Recreation memberships.

Advance registration is required; drop-in players are not accepted. Bring your own equipment. Use the course’s registration link rather than the squash-court reservation button.

Tournaments and Competitive Play

Badminton BC sanctions tournaments across the province, and two of the remaining 2026 events are in Victoria itself. Dates move and entries close early, so treat the table below as a prompt to check the live calendar rather than a schedule to plan around.

A valid Badminton BC membership is required for sanctioned events. Badminton BC's Richmond office is on 604-385-3595 or members@badmintonbc.com. If you are looking up venues on Badminton BC's own where-to-play finder, note that it is organised by zone rather than city — Victoria sits in Zone 6, Vancouver Island and Central Coastal.

How to Choose Where to Play

• If you just want to play this week, go to Brentwood Bay. Five nights, feather shuttles, $7–$8, nothing to book. Tuesday or Thursday 7:30–10:30pm if you are new to the room.
• If you are in the West Shore, you have three choices, not one. Colwood on Friday at $7, John Stubbs on Thursday at $6, and Metchosin's Thursday women's session at $5.
• If you want a Saanich rec centre, that means Commonwealth Place on a Wednesday. Cedar Hill takes court rentals only, and neither Pearkes nor Gordon Head Recreation Centre lists badminton at all.
• For a private court, compare Henderson, Cedar Hill and Cordova Bay. Cedar Hill costs $43.71 per 1.5 hours in its posted windows; Cordova Bay lists $18–$25 an hour. Confirm the billing unit for Henderson’s $12.25 rate.
• If your child is learning, apply to both ladders early. Badminton Victoria runs the competitive pathway; Saanich runs the recreational classes, and its autumn intake was almost entirely full by late August.
• Compare the $72 ten-visit pass with the Access Pass using your expected sessions and other activities.
• Phone before you drive to any of it. The Cedar Hill and Henderson community sessions ask you to call the same day, Brentwood Bay's Friday night needs a text to confirm, and Colwood needs a Thursday sign-up.

Yes, and both formats are seasons rather than drop-ins. The Victoria Sport & Social Club runs a Monday Play & Social at G.R. Pearkes (3100 Tillicum Road) at $189 per person, and a Tuesday league at Royal Oak Middle School at $129 per person or $229 per team. The autumn 2026 seasons run September to early December, with registration closing August 27, 2026; after that, check the live page for the winter intake. You can register solo — VSSC places individuals on teams. Bring your own racquet and indoor court shoes.

Saanich’s adult Access Pass is $68.90 for one month. The continuous version costs $68.90 for the first month and $46.40 for later months. The ten-visit pass costs $72. Count your likely visits across badminton and other included activities before choosing.

›Where can I play badminton in Colwood or the Western Communities?

Three options, not one. The Colwood Badminton Club meets every Friday 7:00–9:30pm at the Colwood Church gym for $7 per person with feather shuttles provided, signing up each Thursday via Google Sheets. John Stubbs Memorial School runs an intermediate 16+ session on Thursdays 8:00–10:00pm for $6 on nylon, through Westshore Parks & Recreation (250-478-8384).
