Quick answer: what do Grade A and Grade B mean?
BWF does not define a retail Grade A or Grade B ladder. Unless a supplier publishes its criteria, treat a bare letter as supplier-specific and do not compare it directly with the same letter on another listing.
Keep these four fields separate:
Model: the named product or item code.
Speed or temperature selection: the flight option for local conditions, not a quality rank.
BWF approval: programme status for the exact listed product or grade and certification period.
Supplier grade: useful only when its issuer explains the criteria.
A grade label is useful only to the extent its issuer defines it. “Grade A” on one listing is not evidence that it is equivalent to “Grade A” on another. Compare written criteria and exact products rather than guessing a translation between two undefined letters.
Official badminton documents use more specific categories. The BWF Laws of Badminton define physical characteristics for feather and synthetic shuttles and an on-court speed test. They do not publish an A/B/C retail-quality ladder.
What does the BWF standardize about a shuttle?
The BWF Laws describe construction, dimensions and a speed test. A feather shuttle has 16 feathers fixed in its base; the document sets ranges for feather length, tip circle, base diameter and mass. Synthetic shuttles have their own provisions.
For the speed test, a player uses a full underhand stroke from the back boundary, contacts the shuttle over that line and sends it upward parallel to the sideline. A correct-speed shuttle lands 530–990 mm short of the opposite back boundary; the testing marks shown in Diagram B are optional. That result concerns pace, not a retail quality letter.

The distinction matters. A visually neat shuttle can still fly too long for a warm hall. A model positioned high in a brand's range can still be ordered in the wrong speed. Conversely, the correct local speed does not tell you how consistently a tube will fly or how long its feathers will last.
How should you read the label on a shuttle tube?
Start with the information that can be traced to a specific product. Record the brand, full model name, item code, material and speed or temperature selection. The Yonex AEROSENSA 30 page, for example, identifies the product by model and item code and lists temperature grades separately. The CAF badminton equipment rule likewise specifies speed 78 separately from its list of eligible shuttle models. That structure is more useful than collapsing model, speed and quality into “premium grade.”
- Find the exact model. Compare like with like, including any suffix or item code.
- Identify the construction. Confirm feather or synthetic and read the manufacturer's own material description.
- Separate the speed selection. Match it to the hall conditions using the maker's guidance and an actual speed test.
- Interrogate the grade. Ask who assigned it, what was inspected and whether the definition is published.
- Check any approval claim by model. Do not infer approval from a logo, brand name or nearby product.
Useful seller criteria would be concrete: the exact materials, allowable visual defects, flight-consistency test, sample size and replacement policy. “Tournament quality” or “Grade A+” without a definition is an undefined seller claim, not a cross-brand specification.

This reading order stops one field from answering another field's question. A published grade definition can help compare two tubes inside the same system. It still does not choose the right speed for the hall, establish official approval or translate itself into another supplier's grade.
Does BWF approval prove that one shuttle is the best?
No. The BWF equipment approval scheme tests submitted products against minimum standards, and the approved-shuttle list identifies the company, product or grade, certificate number and expiry. That status does not rank approved products or create a shared retail A/B ladder.
Check the wording of a competition or association requirement as well. “BWF approved,” “used at a BWF event” and “legal under the Laws” are different claims. A club choosing weekly training shuttles may prioritize suitable speed, repeatable flight and cost per usable rally, while an event may impose a named approval or supply rule.
When verifying a listing, match the company, product or grade and certificate details rather than searching only the brand. Record the expiry shown on the current list and recheck it for a future event. A certificate period answers programme status; it does not predict how one retail tube will perform in your hall.
How can a club screen a new tube with five shuttles?
House method, not BWF: label five shuttles from one tube, use the same hall, court and tester, obtain one valid Law 3 result for each, then add visual, comparable-clear and fixed-workload durability checks. BWF supplies only the Law 3 stroke and landing band; the sample size and other checks are ours.

Rotate all five shuttles through the same checks rather than testing one favourite shuttle repeatedly. Keep the comparison bounded: five shuttles can reveal whether that sample deserves a larger club trial, but it cannot establish a factory-wide defect rate.
If two models both pass the pace and flight screen, compare their cost for the same fixed workload, consistency across the five, or suitability for drills versus matches. Re-run the screen when the season, hall temperature or supply batch changes materially.
Use one row per shuttle in the club log. Record its speed-test result, any visible wobble, the drill or match block in which it was used and the reason it left play. “Feather broke after contact with the frame” is different from “flight became inconsistent during ordinary clears,” so replacement reasons are more informative than a bare minutes-played total.
Set the purchase decision before the trial: for example, buy one additional case only when all five land in the intended speed zone and at least four remain suitable for the target session after the same test block. That threshold is a local purchasing choice, not a manufacturing grade. Another club can choose a different threshold for feeding drills or competition.
What should you buy when two brands use different grades?
Ignore the shared letter until both suppliers define it. Compare the exact models at the speed appropriate to the same hall, screen equal-sized samples and record replacement reasons. That gives the club evidence about its actual use case instead of a guessed translation between two private grading systems.
Do not assume a lower tier always uses the same construction with merely looser tolerances. That may be true for a particular documented product family, but the official and manufacturer sources reviewed for this guide do not support it as a general rule across brands.
Keep the tube label with the test record until the sample is finished. When a later purchase behaves differently, the club can compare model, speed selection, batch information and hall conditions instead of attributing every change to the seller's grade letter.
