The pattern to notice is not vague soreness everywhere; it is usually pain you can point to with one finger. A stress fracture often hurts at foot strike — the moment your foot hits the court — and the discomfort tends to build as you keep playing.

  • Localized tenderness: one small spot on the foot, ankle, or shin is painful to press, rather than a broad tired-muscle feeling.

Be extra cautious with possible high-risk sites: the front of the shin bone, the navicular in the midfoot, the sesamoids under the big toe, and the first or fifth metatarsals. Routine X-rays can miss stress fractures, so a clinician may order an MRI or bone scan if symptoms fit.


Reducing Risk: Load, Strength, Surfaces, and Footwear
