Quick Answer: Badminton Nanaimo
If you live in Nanaimo, start with Oliver Woods or Bowen Park, then use VIU if campus access fits your week.
Nanaimo
Best first stop: City-listed courts plus Badminton Nanaimo sessions at Oliver Woods.
Comox/Campbell
Choose this for low-cost Courtenay drop-in or stronger Campbell River club play.
Zone 6 towns
Use Badminton BC listings for Duncan, Oceanside, Port Alberni juniors and Salt Spring.
Badminton in Nanaimo is easier to find once you know which lane you fit: City of Nanaimo drop-in at Oliver Woods or Bowen Park, Badminton Nanaimo’s pre-booked Oliver Woods doubles, VIU gym access, then Zone 6 clubs up-island and across the mid-Island. The tricky part is that schedules, seasons, membership requirements and shuttle rules are split across different calendars, so showing up cold can mean the wrong night, wrong level or missing birds.
Use this guide to choose the right court first, then confirm the current calendar before you drive.

Nanaimo courts: Oliver Woods, Bowen Park and VIU
The two City of Nanaimo facility options to start with are Oliver Woods Community Centre and Bowen Park Complex. For organized club play, Badminton Nanaimo is based at Oliver Woods, 6000 Oliver Road, and uses CourtReserve for bookings; every player needs a current Badminton BC recreation-level membership or higher. Its seasonal Oliver Woods doubles blocks run Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, with sessions listed as self-organized 2-hour doubles groups at $29, ideally 5–6 players, and players supply their own shuttles. The Saturday AM drop-in is aimed at strong social/intermediate-or-above players, with feather shuttles included. Schedules and fees change by season, so check the current CourtReserve calendar before going.
The university option is VIU Gym, Building 190, which has a multi-court gym floor. VIU students get free gym membership from September to April; alumni and community members register at the front desk on arrival. Weekly gym-floor hours are posted in the Building 190 lobby, and the VIU badminton club/team practices Sundays 11am–1pm.
Comox Valley and Campbell River: cheap drop-in and stronger club play
If you’re north of Nanaimo, choose by pace. City of Courtenay drop-in is the low-cost daytime option: Vern Nichols Gym, ages 16+, $4 per session, Wednesdays and Fridays 1:15–3:15 p.m. The spring schedule lists April 8–September 2, with some dates relocated to MP Hall, so check the current City schedule before driving.
For steadier adult club play, Courtenay Badminton Club plays in Comox on Mondays 7–9 p.m. and Thursdays 7:30–9:30 p.m.; age 18+, $10 drop-in.
Campbell River Badminton Club is the stronger north-island doubles stop: Sportsplex, 1800 South Alder Street, Thu/Sun 7:30–9:30 p.m. September–May, Sundays only June–August. It is ages 16+, intermediate/advanced doubles with partner mixing, $12 per night or $10 with 3+ sessions, cash/eTransfer, Victor Champion #1 feather shuttles, Badminton BC membership required, and no junior program. Its next Cindy Simpson Memorial tournament is January 8–10, 2027.
Cowichan, Oceanside, Port Alberni and Salt Spring groups
For players outside Nanaimo, Badminton BC’s Zone 6 directory groups several smaller Central Vancouver Island and Gulf Island options. Treat these as community listings and confirm before driving, especially where schedules are not published.
| Area | Group | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cowichan Valley | Duncan Badminton Club | Listed in Zone 6, but no schedule details are published in the directory; check Badminton BC for current information. |
| Port Alberni | Alberni Athletic Association Junior Badminton Club | Junior lessons Monday and Thursday: ages 9–12 from 6–7pm; ages 13–18 from 7–8pm. |
| Coombs / Parksville–Qualicum | Oceanside Mixed Badminton | Adults; mixed play Tuesday and Thursday 1–3pm, women-only Monday and Wednesday 1–3pm. No lessons listed. |
| Salt Spring Island | Salt Spring Badminton | Tuesday 6–8pm, all ages. |
Before you go: memberships, seasons and what to bring
Central Vancouver Island badminton is organized within Badminton BC Zone 6, so club nights may require more than simply paying at the door. Badminton Nanaimo requires every player to hold a current Badminton BC recreation-level membership or higher. Campbell River also requires paid-up Badminton BC membership, listed by the club at $16/year.
Check the current calendar before driving across the Island. Badminton Nanaimo separates fall/winter and spring/summer schedules, Courtenay posts date-specific municipal drop-in windows, and Campbell River runs Thursday/Sunday play from September to May but Sundays only from June to August.
- Badminton Nanaimo booked doubles: players supply their own shuttles.
- Badminton Nanaimo Saturday AM drop-in: feather shuttles are included.
- Campbell River: the club uses Victor Champion #1 feather shuttles.
FAQ, source note and nearby guides
Can I walk in? For Nanaimo club sessions, plan to book through CourtReserve when required; community and university drop-ins should be checked the day you go because gym schedules can change.
What about parking? Parking details were not consistently verified in the official listings, so confirm with the facility page or front desk before driving, especially for evening sessions.
Best beginner option? If you are new, start with city or community drop-ins. Choose Badminton Nanaimo’s all-skill booked doubles if you already have a small group; choose Campbell River only if intermediate or advanced doubles fits you.
Do seasons matter? Yes. Club calendars can shift between fall/winter and spring/summer, and university access follows posted campus recreation hours.
Update note: Details verified as of July 2026 against official City of Nanaimo, Badminton BC, Badminton Nanaimo, VIU, City of Courtenay and Campbell River Badminton Club pages.

Which should you choose?
Not every Central Island option solves the same problem. Use this quick filter before checking the current calendar.
- Lowest cost: start with municipal or community drop-ins, such as City of Courtenay programs or City of Nanaimo facilities; confirm the current calendar before driving.
- Social/partners: choose organized club or mixed-group play — Badminton Nanaimo, Oceanside Mixed Badminton or Salt Spring Badminton — when you want repeat partners and court rotation.
- Competitive: look at stronger adult club environments, especially Campbell River Badminton Club, Courtenay Badminton Club or higher-level Nanaimo sessions.
- Family/junior: use junior-specific pathways first: Badminton Nanaimo for Nanaimo-area juniors, or Alberni Athletic Association Junior Badminton Club for Port Alberni.
- Beginner: choose drop-in or all-level formats before a committed club night; if unsure, read our lessons vs drop-in guide.
