A 2016 review in Current Sports Medicine Reports describes a sprint-type strain, where the hamstring eccentrically brakes the swinging leg during running, and a stretch-type strain from activities "that combine hip flexion with knee extension," such as dancing, slide tackling or high kicking. A badminton lunge (the front leg reaching forward while the hip flexes toward a low shuttle) loads the hamstring through that same pattern, against your own braking bodyweight instead of a kick. It also explains the reported pop: the review notes an audible pop at the moment of injury is reported mostly in this stretch-type pattern, not the sprint type.
The pattern matches how often badminton hurts the lower body overall. A 2025 systematic review in BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine pooling 21 studies put badminton injury rates at roughly 1 to 4 per 1000 hours of play, with lower-body injuries making up 41 to 92 percent of the total and strains alone 11 to 64 percent. The practical read: if you play once a week, went straight from a desk to a cold court, and felt a sudden pull reaching for a short shuttle rather than while running flat out, that is the textbook badminton hamstring strain, not an unlucky sprint injury.
The Staged Loading Progression That Rebuilds It
Rebuilding a strained hamstring works in four stages, each cleared only when the current stage is pain-free rather than on a fixed schedule: isometric holds, slow eccentric range, loaded lengthening, then court-specific lunge reaches and shadow footwork at increasing speed. No gym or machines required; every stage below uses bodyweight only.
Stage 1, isometric. Lie face down, bend the knee to about 90 degrees, and press your heel into a towel or a partner's hand for 5 to 10 seconds, well short of maximum effort. Move on only once you can walk normally, jog at a very low speed, and hold that press pain-free, the same graduation test a clinical rehab protocol uses before adding load.
Stage 2, slow eccentrics through range. A single-leg Romanian deadlift, bodyweight only: hinge at the hip with a soft knee, lower for a slow four-count, then stand up. Stage 4, court-specific. The only stage that looks like badminton: controlled lunge reaches to a fed shuttle, starting slow and shallow, then adding depth, speed and unpredictability across sessions, followed by shadow footwork at match pace. Red Flags, Grading, and What Comes Next
Severe pain at the moment of injury, an audible pop, or visible bruising along the back of the thigh point to a Grade II or III tear rather than a strain you can load through, and any one of those three signs is a reason to see a clinician before starting the staged progression above.
Grading runs from mild to severe. Grade I carries no real loss of strength beyond mild soreness. Grade II is a partial tear with moderate weakness, local swelling and visible bruising down the back of the thigh. Grade III is a complete tear with significant loss of function, sometimes with a palpable gap in the muscle.
