Do Badminton Insoles With Arch Support Help Your Lunge?

Badminton insoles with arch support can change a lunge, but current studies do not show a universal upgrade. In short laboratory tests they made landing force rise less abruptly and changed knee and ankle motion, while one model estimated more kneecap-joint stress. Treat support as a fit-and-symptom experiment, not protection.

Do Arch-Support Insoles Help a Badminton Lunge?

An arch-support insole can make the same forward lunge load your body differently. It did not simply soften everything: one study found a slower rise in vertical force and less knee external rotation, but also higher modelled stress behind the kneecap. Peak vertical force did not change.

In a 2026 PeerJ forward-lunge study, 16 trained male university players used the stock insole and one standardized arch-support insole in the same badminton shoe. With arch support, the mass-normalized vertical-force loading rate fell from 49.43 to 31.50 N/(kg·s)—about 5.04 to 3.21 body weights per second. That means the force built less abruptly; it does not mean the landing’s peak force was smaller.

The support also produced less knee external rotation and more ankle dorsiflexion. At the same time, the researchers estimated peak patellofemoral stress—the stress at the joint between the kneecap and thigh bone—at more than 12% higher, with the stress-time integral more than 11% higher.

The kneecap result needs its full label: it was estimated with a two-dimensional mathematical model based on cadaveric data, not measured inside a player’s joint. The experiment tested an immediate response in healthy, experienced men using one shoe, one insole and one movement. It did not track symptoms, injuries or long-term adaptation.


Where Does Arch Support Move the Load?

Arch support changes the shape under the foot, so the foot, ankle, knee and hip may reorganize around it. That is load redistribution, not load deletion. The response depends on the support height, shoe, movement and player rather than the words “arch support” alone.

A separate 2026 PLOS One sidestep-cut study tested 15 male competitive players with normal arches using no added support, 5 mm support and 8 mm support. During a controlled 45-degree cut, the 8 mm condition increased ankle dorsiflexion and anterior–posterior ankle joint contact force compared with no support. Knee and hip contact forces did not differ significantly.

That does not make 8 mm a danger line or a recommendation. It was one experimental insert in one standardized shoe, and its contact forces came from a musculoskeletal model. The result simply shows why “more support” cannot be assumed to mean “more protection.”

There is no clear speed dividend either. An earlier study of 18 college-team players found changes in hip flexion and foot inversion with arch support, but no statistically significant improvement in its badminton-specific performance tests. Keep an insole for a defined fit or comfort question—not for promised faster footwork.


Who Has a Sensible Reason to Trial One?

A controlled trial is most reasonable when you have one mild, repeatable foot-comfort problem and a secure court shoe with enough room. It is less sensible when nothing hurts, when you are trying to treat an active injury or when the extra insole changes heel hold and toe space.

Flat feet do not automatically make the evidence more applicable. The forward-lunge study required healthy feet, and the sidestep study enrolled players with normal arches. If foot shape is the main question, separate it from pain and start with shoe fit rather than assuming the tallest support is the answer.


How to Trial Badminton Insoles Over Two Weeks

Use two weeks to test compatibility, not to prove treatment. The schedule below is a Badminton House fit check; the NHS source supports gradual introduction, not this exact two-week badminton timeline. Keep the court shoe, socks and normal training load unchanged so the insole is the only new variable. Introduce walking first, then controlled badminton, and abandon the trial if support compromises fit or creates symptoms elsewhere.

Kent Community Health NHS orthotic guidance—written for prescribed devices—starts with 1–2 hours, builds wear gradually and warns against going straight into intense exercise. It also advises consulting the prescriber before jumping because a device that moves can hurt the heel. A self-chosen sport insole deserves at least the same caution.

Stage What to do What must remain true
Before day 1 Follow the device instructions for the stock liner. Seat the insole flat, lace fully, then walk, stop and change direction. Toes are not crowded, the heel stays down and the insole does not curl or slide.
Days 1–3 Wear it for 1–2 hours on each of the first two days, then add time only if comfortable. Walk; do not use hard lunges or jumps as the first test. No pain, rubbing, persistent pressure mark or change in walking.
Days 4–7 After comfortable walking, add the warm-up, controlled shadow footwork and 10–20 minutes of easy hitting. The device remains fixed through split steps, braking and gentle changes of direction.
Days 8–14 Try one ordinary, non-competitive session. Keep its duration and intensity familiar. Foot comfort is repeatably the same or better, with no new knee, ankle or skin complaint during play or the next morning.

After each exposure, record five comparisons: arch comfort, front-of-knee comfort, ankle comfort, skin pressure or rubbing and heel security. Use “better, same or worse.” That gives you a cleaner decision than interpreting one quick rally or one unfamiliar pressure sensation.


When Should You Stop the Trial?

An insole trial succeeds only if the shoe remains secure, foot comfort improves repeatably and no new symptoms appear at the knee, ankle or skin. Worsening pain is not a break-in target. A support that slides, crowds the toes or lifts the heel has failed the badminton fit test.

  • Stop for pain: new or increasing pain in the arch, heel, ankle, front of the knee or patellar tendon.
  • Stop for skin pressure: persistent redness, rubbing, a hot spot or a blister.
  • Stop for lost shoe control: heel lift, toe crowding, a curled edge or movement during a split step, jump or cut.
  • Get assessed instead of experimenting: severe or sudden pain, marked swelling, inability to bear weight or a knee that locks or gives way.

If the trial is neutral, return to the stock setup; there is no demonstrated performance reason to keep extra support. If comfort improves without a new problem and the shoe stays locked in, you have evidence that this specific insole-and-shoe combination suits you—not proof that it prevents injury or will suit every future shoe.

Make the decision after two controlled weeks

  1. Keep the stock insole when the original setup is comfortable and secure.
  2. Keep the arch-support insole only when the same court task feels repeatably better with no fit or symptom trade-off.
  3. Get individual assessment when pain—not simple late-session fatigue—is the problem you are trying to solve.
