Quick answer: which badminton lunge loads the knee most?
There is no universal “worst corner.” An exploratory model found higher patellofemoral loading in some left-side lunges for right-side-dominant players, while other studies show that direction, task, fatigue and player characteristics change the biomechanics. Spread deliberate drill exposure instead of hammering one corner.
Direction matters: measured and modelled loads are not uniform across lunge tasks.
Fatigue matters: laboratory fatigue changes knee flexion, stiffness, balance and drive-off mechanics.
Pain is different: a load model cannot diagnose pain or set your safe lunge count.
The practical problem in a long drop-in session is not finding one forbidden corner. It is recognizing that repeated lunges accumulate under changing movement quality. You can manage the deliberate part of that exposure by rotating feeds, breaking up same-corner work and moving demanding footwork earlier.
Evidence boundary: Biomechanical load is not pain or injury. Existing or worsening pain, swelling, locking, giving way or altered weight-bearing needs qualified assessment, not a redesigned drill.

What did the directional knee-load study find?
The exploratory study found that modelled patellofemoral loading differed by direction. It did not show that one corner causes pain in every player, and its direction labels should not be converted into a universal drill ban.
The 2021 musculoskeletal and finite-element investigation reported greater simulated contact pressure and stress during left-side lunges than right-side lunges in right-side-dominant players. Within the left-side conditions, the left-backward model exceeded left-forward.
Those were modelled tissue outcomes derived from laboratory data—not reports of pain, injury or time loss. The responsible conclusion is “direction-dependent,” not “left-back is dangerous.” Your approach speed, technique, dominant side, fatigue, playing level and the exact task may change the comparison.
Why can’t research rank every badminton corner?
A lunge direction is only one part of the task. Studies use different instructions, distances, approaches, skill levels, shoes and outcome measures, so results from one protocol do not create a stable league table of “most harmful” corners.
A 2020 scoping review of 20 badminton-lunge biomechanics papers catalogued comparisons across playing levels, footwear, directions and lunge variations. It reported contradictory kinematic findings and called for more realistic, unanticipated testing.

How does fatigue change badminton lunge mechanics?
Laboratory fatigue changes movement and force strategies, which means a lunge late in a hard block is not mechanically identical to the first repetition. The studies do not supply an injury threshold or test session order. Keeping demanding, repetitive footwork away from the most fatigued part of the session is a conservative Badminton House planning choice, not a proven injury-prevention rule.
In a 2025 study of 24 amateur badminton players, forehand and backhand forward lunges produced different joint-moment patterns. After a sprint-and-jump fatigue protocol, participants showed a lower peak knee-flexion angle and greater leg stiffness during the recovery phase.
A separate study of 12 male collegiate players repeating lunges to exhaustion found impaired postural control and lower knee and hip drive-off moment and power after fatigue. These are small controlled studies, not evidence that a particular late-session lunge causes injury.
How can you redistribute a two-hour drop-in block?
Control the exposure you can see: deliberate feeds, footwork drills, game sequence and breaks. Rotate targeted corners before matches, avoid finishing with a long same-corner multifeed block, and keep the next day lighter when the drop-in was unusually demanding.

What if one lunge direction already hurts?
Do not use the direction studies to explain or test existing pain. Pause the movement that reproduces it and arrange qualified assessment when pain persists, worsens or changes normal walking, weight-bearing or play.
In a retrospective survey that defined serious injury as more than three weeks of lost time, 64% of badminton respondents in the “knee—unspecified injury” category reported a significant and persistent loss of performance after the injury. That does not mean 64% of badminton players have a performance-limiting knee injury; it shows why a symptom that already limits play deserves more than a corner-rotation spreadsheet.
Use the research without overreading it
- Treat lunge load as direction- and fatigue-dependent, not uniform.
- Rotate deliberate feeds and place demanding footwork before accumulated fatigue.
- Treat pain as an assessment question, not proof that one research direction applies to you.
