Wrong Service Court in Badminton: What the Rule Says

Quick answer: A service court error means a player served or received out of turn, or served or received from the wrong service court. Under the current Laws, the fix is simple: correct the positions the next time the shuttle is out of play, and let the existing score stand. No rally gets replayed, and no point is lost.


What Counts as a Service Court Error

A service court error is either of two mistakes defined by the current Laws of Badminton: a player serving or receiving out of turn, or a player serving or receiving from the wrong service court. Both are common in unofficiated club and league doubles, and both are corrected the same way.

Law 12.1 of the current BWF Laws of Badminton spells out the two error types directly: a player has served or received out of turn, or has served or received from the wrong service court. The first is a mix-up about which player holds the racket. The second is a mix-up about which box that player stands in. Either one breaks the rotation set out in Law 11.4, which also states that no player may receive two consecutive services in the same game.


How the Error Gets Corrected, No Matter When It Is Found

However late a service court error is spotted, whether mid-rally, right after that rally, or several rallies into the next game, the fix is identical. The Laws correct the positions the next time the shuttle is not in play and let the existing score stand; nothing already played gets replayed or reversed.

That timing detail matters most for the mid-rally case. If you spot the mix-up while the shuttle is still going back and forth, you do not stop play. Law 12 only requires the correction once the shuttle is dead, so you finish the rally, let it count normally, and fix the positions before the next serve. Discovered a whole game later? The same rule applies: nobody replays the missed rallies, and every point already on the board stays there.


Rebuilding the Right Courts from the Score

You can work out who belongs where without replaying the match. In doubles, an even or zero score for the serving side means the server stands in the right service court; an odd score means the left. The receiver is always the player standing diagonally opposite.

This is the score-parity rule set out in Law 11.1 of the same Laws: an even or zero score serves right; an odd score serves left. The receiving side's other player takes the opposite box, since each side has exactly one player in each court. An independent breakdown of the scoring rules confirms the same mechanics in plain terms. Courts also stay fixed between rallies: a side only swaps its own left and right boxes once it wins a point while serving, so a team that wins a rally as the receiver becomes the new server without its assigned courts moving.

Score parity only tells you the correct box. It will not tell you which of your two players is actually due to serve next after an out-of-turn mix-up, since that depends on the fixed order your side set at 0-0 and has followed ever since. Two Worked Examples

Two short examples show the correction in action. In the first, the server stands in the wrong box, and the score-parity check catches it. In the second, the wrong player serves because the rotation broke down. Both are fixed at the next dead shuttle, and both scores stand exactly where they were.

Example one, wrong court. A doubles side's score is 6, an even number, but their server is serving from the left court instead of the right. That is a Law 12.1.2 violation: serving from the wrong service court. Once the current rally ends, the server moves to the right box for the next serve at that same score. Nothing about the rally that was just played changes.

Example two, wrong player. A doubles side's score reaches 9-7 in their favour when someone notices the wrong partner served three rallies ago; the player due up next in the rotation never got the racket. That is a Law 12.1.1 violation: serving out of turn. The fix follows the same principle. At the next dead shuttle, the correct player takes over serving from the correct box, found with the score-parity check above, and the score stays 9-7. Every point scored during those three out-of-turn rallies stands as played.

The two categories point to two different questions. "Was the serving side's score even or odd" settles a wrong-court mix-up on its own, since the answer fixes the box directly. "Whose turn was it in the four-player rotation" settles a wrong-player mix-up, and that answer only comes from tracking who has already served this game. Knowing which question you are actually answering is most of the fix.
