Where to Look in Badminton: Quiet Eye and Gaze Habits

Where to fix your eyes in four common situations

Fix your eyes on the parts of the opponent's body and racket that move differently for different shots (the racket-side shoulder, upper arm and racket head), not on the shuttle itself. The exact target shifts with the situation: receiving serve, defending a smash, playing net in doubles, and retreating to the rear court.

Receiving serve The server's racket-side shoulder and upper arm through the backswing, then the racket head into contact. These are the discriminating body parts that actually differ between serve types, and fixating them predicts direction earlier than watching the shuttle can.
Defending a smash The hitter's racket arm and shoulder line through the swing, held until contact rather than jumping to the shuttle early. A smash's steepness is set by shoulder rotation and arm path before the racket ever touches the shuttle. Eyes already on the shuttle are reading the shot a beat late.
Net in doubles The net opponent's racket face and wrist as they shape the shot. At net-kill speed the shuttle crosses too fast for a shuttle-first read to beat it. The racket face and wrist telegraph a kill, a spin or a lift while the shot is still being shaped, the same discriminating-cue pattern measured for the serve.
Retreating to the rear court The hitter's shoulder and racket path, while your feet handle the retreat. Watching your own footwork or the back boundary line delays the shoulder-first read that separates a clear from a drop.

This is not badminton folklore. A study using international-standard players serving and expert and novice receivers wearing eye-movement registration systems found that expert receivers fixated the server's discriminating shoulder, arm and racket kinematics more often and for longer than novices, and players were generally more accurate when their eyes were on that discriminating arm and racket rather than the shuttle. The same discriminating-body-parts logic is what the smash, net and rear-court rows above extend to situations the study did not test directly.

A 2026 meta-analysis pooling 26 visual-search studies across 611 individual-sport athletes found this pattern holds broadly, and that it is sport-specific in its detail: experts show fewer, longer, more selective fixations than novices, and badminton experts in particular key on distal cues such as the arm and racket. The same review found tennis experts, a different sport within the same dataset, key more on trunk and hip kinematics. That is a tennis-specific result, not a badminton one, and it is a useful reminder that a gaze habit proven in one racket sport does not automatically transfer to another.


Why watching the shuttle is the weakest habit in badminton

Watching the shuttle itself is the least useful visual habit in badminton. Eye-tracking research on badminton serving found less-skilled players fixate on the shuttle more than skilled players do, while skilled players spend that time reading the court, the net, and the opponent's body instead.

The clearest evidence comes from the serve itself. Twelve skilled and twelve less-skilled singles players wore mobile eye-tracking glasses through 662 serves against a live opponent, and the frame-by-frame analysis found skilled players took longer preparatory time before serving and fixated on significantly more distinct areas, especially the court and net, while less-skilled players found the shuttle more informative. That is a strange result if the shuttle were the important thing to look at. It stops being strange once you notice the shuttle is simply the easiest thing to look at, and easiest is not the same as most useful.

The same study found a genuine nuance worth keeping: quiet eye duration, the length of the final fixation before the serving action begins, did not differ significantly between the two skill groups for this particular self-paced task. Quiet eye seems to matter most for reactive skills, judging where an incoming shot is going, and less for a skill you start yourself on your own timing. Train the two as separate skills rather than assuming one long stare fixes everything.


How a stronger player's eyes behave differently

Skill shows up in the eyes as fewer, longer, more selective fixations. In badminton specifically, gaze also splits by stroke: players glance more before committing on a backhand than a forehand, beginners glance more than everyone on both strokes, and the last look before movement gets measurably shorter under pressure in every skill group.

The clearest badminton evidence for the stroke split comes from an eye-tracking comparison of beginner, intermediate and expert players hitting forehand clears and backhand drives from a controlled shuttlecock launcher. Gaze counts, the number of distinct fixations per stroke, were significantly higher on forehand clears than backhand drives at every skill level, while pre-fixation counts, extra unstable glances made before the eyes settle, were significantly higher on backhand drives than forehand clears at every level. Beginners produced significantly more of those unstable glances than intermediate or expert players on both strokes. In plain terms, the backhand side asks more of your eyes than the forehand side does, and a shaky, glance-heavy gaze on that side is a beginner signature rather than a stroke-mechanics problem.

Quiet eye duration, the length of that final fixation before you commit to a movement, drops under pressure too. In a serve-anticipation study using expert and novice badminton players, high match-style anxiety produced a significantly shorter final fixation than low anxiety in both groups, and the resulting drop in anticipation accuracy was significantly larger for novices than for experts. In a separate study of the badminton backhand serve, skilled players held a longer quiet eye than novices, most clearly in the doubles short-serve condition, where quiet eye duration tracked with wrist control through contact. Both point the same direction: a longer, steadier final look is trainable, and it is worth more the harder the situation gets.


One drill that trains a longer, stable final fixation

Train a longer final fixation with a two-person feed drill: a partner calls a number the instant they make contact, and you must say the number back before you take your first movement step. If you cannot call it, your eyes left the hitting zone too early, the same pattern eye-tracking studies found in weaker badminton players.

Set it up on a real court with a real partner, not shadow practice. Stand in a return-of-serve or defensive-ready position for whichever situation from the table above you are training. Your partner feeds the shot and calls a number, a color, or holds up fingers at the moment their racket makes contact, before the shuttle has travelled far enough to read on its own. Say it back immediately. A correct, fast call means your eyes were already on the racket at contact. A late or wrong call means your eyes were still finishing an earlier glance, or were already chasing the shuttle.

Film the drill from front-on with a phone on a tripod to catch what a stopwatch cannot. Watch for the head snapping toward the shuttle before the racket has finished its swing; a head that stays still and level through contact is a rough proxy for a final fixation that held. Run it in three stages: a slow, cooperative feed first so you can find the habit at all, then an unpredictable feed mixing two or three shot types so you cannot pre-guess the target, then a live conditioned rally where the call only happens on request. Move to the next stage only once you are calling correctly on most reps.

Put this into practice this week

  1. Pick one situation from the table above. You cannot fix four gaze habits in one session.
  2. Run the number-call drill for that situation, cooperative feed first, ten reps.
  3. Film one set from the front and check whether your head stays level through contact.
  4. Add an unpredictable feed once your cooperative call rate is reliable, then retire the drill and rally normally.
