How power grommets change string-bed deflection

The simple version: power grommets give selected strings more room to move. Instead of every string being tightly guided through a small, uniform hole, enlarged grommet holes let the string shift more freely when the shuttle compresses the string bed.

Some passage shapes change where a string is supported and therefore its free span. Völkl describes this mechanism for its tennis Big Grommets; it is an engineering analogy, not proof that every badminton system uses the same pivot geometry or produces the same response.

This is why power grommets are usually placed strategically, not everywhere. Their job is to tune how specific areas of the string bed bend under load, rather than simply making the whole racket feel softer.

Do they change your sweet spot?

Grommet geometry may affect response, but “bigger hole = bigger sweet spot” is not a sufficient explanation. The sweet spot is the area of the string bed that returns the shuttle with the highest responsiveness, often described mechanically as a higher coefficient-of-restitution zone. Because that response depends on stiffness across the whole string bed, changing grommet diameter can change how the bed flexes near the frame and how forgiving off-centre contact feels.

Hole layout matters as much as hole size. Also test net shots, blocks and flat placements. Players may prefer different feedback, and more string movement does not necessarily mean less control. That is why aftermarket swaps deserve caution, especially on frames with asymmetric or model-specific power-grommet layouts. A visually similar grommet may change the pivot point of the string, interfere with the intended deflection pattern, or sit proud of the frame instead of protecting the hole edge.
