A badminton string reel can be a good fit when you expect to use most of one string type. Start with the reel length, choose a conservative cut length, and divide. The result is more useful than guessing from the spool's remaining diameter.

Start with the labelled length

Use the length printed for the exact reel, rather than assuming every reel is the same. Ten-metre sets and 200 m reels are common formats, so 10 m is a sensible starting point for the arithmetic. It is not proof that every frame will consume exactly 10 m.

For example, Ashaway lists its Rally 21 Fire as a 10 m set or 200 m reel. Other manufacturers use the same broad format: STIGA lists 10 m and 200 m variants, while Babolat lists a 200 m reel and 10.2 m trim for one badminton string.

Your next decision is simple: read the reel label, then use that actual metre count in the formula below. Do not mix a 200 m calculation with a reel that contains another length.


Nominal yield versus practical shop yield

The nominal yield is the clean division on paper. Practical yield is the number of full, comfortable cuts you can make while leaving room for the way you mount, tension, tie off, and trim. Treat the practical number as your planning number.

The 10.5 m line is an allocation, not a universal stringing rule. It deliberately protects against coming up short and makes the arithmetic honest: the twentieth nominal job is not promised. If your frame or method consistently needs more, increase the allocation.


Measure your own three-job average

The most reliable reel estimate is your own record of three completed restrings with the same frame family and method. Measure every cut before you begin, then subtract the usable offcuts you actually keep. Average those three net amounts before planning the rest of the reel.

  1. Cut and note the starting length for each of the next three jobs.
  2. After each job, measure only offcuts you will genuinely reuse. Treat tiny pieces as waste.
  3. Calculate: average used metres = (job 1 + job 2 + job 3) ÷ 3.
  4. Calculate remaining jobs: usable reel metres ÷ your average, rounded down.

Example: if your three net amounts are 10.3 m, 10.4 m, and 10.5 m, the average is 10.4 m. A 200 m reel then supports 19 complete 10.4 m allocations, with 2.4 m left. Rounding down prevents a half-finished last job from becoming your plan.


When a reel is worth buying

A reel makes sense when you will use the same string often enough to finish it before your preferences change. A single set is usually the better test when you restring only once or twice a year, want to compare strings, or do not yet know your cut length.

For a straightforward comparison, ignore labour and use generic units. If a reel costs 160 units and you plan for 19 jobs, the string cost is 160 ÷ 19 = 8.42 units per job. Compare that with the price of a single set of the same string. This reveals the break-even point without pretending that every player has the same prices.

A practical reel decision

  1. Test a single set first if the string is unfamiliar.
  2. Use 19 jobs as the conservative starting yield for a 200 m reel.
  3. Replace that estimate with your three-job average once you have it.
