How to Slow Down a Shuttlecock by Tipping the Feathers

Quick answer: how do you slow down a shuttlecock?

Test it first. For informal practice with your own feather shuttle, gently tip a small, evenly spaced group of feather ends outward and test again. The change is permanent. Players must not alter a shuttle during a match, and BWF officials treat tipping as an exceptional last resort when the correct speed is unavailable.

A shuttle that feels fast is not automatically the wrong speed. Your stroke, the hall, temperature, altitude and shuttle condition can all affect the result. Use the defined court test before making a permanent change, and keep the casual owner-adjustment method separate from official play.

Scope: the step-by-step adjustment below is only for an owner's natural-feather shuttle in agreed informal practice. Do not alter match shuttles, shared club tubes, synthetic skirts or another player's equipment.


How do you test shuttlecock speed correctly?

Stand on court and strike the shuttle with a full underhand stroke, contacting it over one back boundary line. Send it upward and parallel to the sidelines toward the opposite back boundary. A correct-speed shuttle lands at least 530 mm and no more than 990 mm short of that far line.

  1. Use the actual shuttle: test the individual feather shuttle you are considering changing.
  2. Place contact correctly: the shuttle should be struck over the back boundary line, not well inside the court.
  3. Hit full and upward: use a committed underhand stroke and keep the flight parallel to a sideline.
  4. Read the landing: measure how far short it finishes from the opposite back boundary line.
  5. Repeat a close result: if the first landing is near a limit, repeat with the same stroke before changing anything.

This procedure and landing range come from Law 3 of the BWF Laws of Badminton. A landing less than 530 mm short is beyond the fast end of the defined range; one more than 990 mm short is beyond the slow end.

One inconsistent stroke is not a diagnosis. If two players produce very different results, ask the more repeatable tester to make several attempts. If multiple fresh shuttles from the tube land similarly, the tube's speed grade may be a better explanation than damage to one shuttle.

How does outward feather tipping slow a shuttle?

Outward tipping bends the ends of selected natural feathers slightly away from the cork. The practical method uses that outward adjustment to slow a shuttle that tests too fast. Inward tipping is used in the opposite direction, so it is not the adjustment to use when a shuttle already tests too fast.

The change cannot be specified as a guaranteed number of centimetres. Feather stiffness and wear vary, as do conditions and strokes. Treat the first adjustment as a small trial and use the next court test—not a promised formula—to decide whether to stop.

  1. Confirm ownership and material. Use only your own natural-feather practice shuttle, with every participant's agreement.
  2. Hold the cork. Keep pressure off the feather shafts and do not crush the skirt.
  3. Start with every fourth feather. Make a small outward bend near each selected tip, spacing the changes evenly around the skirt.
  4. Test again. Repeat the same speed-test stroke and compare the landing with the 530–990 mm range.
  5. Escalate only if still too fast. A commonly taught next step is to adjust every second feather, again evenly, then retest.
  6. Retire unstable results. Stop using the shuttle if the skirt becomes visibly distorted or its flight wobbles.

Can you tip a shuttle during an official match?

A player must not do it. BWF Law 16.6.2 prohibits deliberately modifying or damaging the shuttle to change its speed or flight. If a match shuttle seems wrong, wait until the rally ends and ask the umpire to check it. Do not privately bend, twist or pluck feathers.

The official instructions contain a narrow exception for event operations, not a player repair. When no shuttles of the correct speed are available, tipping may be used exceptionally as a last resort to continue play, preferably by the service judge or another neutral person. The referee is the sole judge of shuttle speed. Those boundaries are set in the BWF Instructions to Technical Officials.

That exception does not turn an informal technique into an ordinary match right. It confirms the opposite: officials control the decision, the correct-speed shuttle is preferred, and adjustment is reserved for an equipment shortage.   • Official match: ask for a check and follow the umpire or referee's process.
  • Shared club tube: get explicit permission; otherwise leave every shuttle unchanged.
  • Another player's tube: never alter it.
  • Synthetic shuttle: do not apply feather-tipping instructions to a moulded skirt.

When is a different speed grade the better fix?

Choose a different tube when several fresh shuttles consistently miss the range in the same direction. Tipping every shuttle is permanent, takes time and can create uneven results. A suitable factory speed grade gives the group a clean starting point.

Also replace rather than adjust a shuttle with broken shafts, missing feather material, a loose skirt or unstable flight. The speed test assumes a usable shuttle. It cannot convert structural damage into consistent equipment.

For one owned shuttle in a casual session, a small, even outward adjustment can be useful. For a tube, club or match, solve the selection problem at its source: test under the actual hall conditions and use a speed grade that lands in range.

Bottom line: diagnose first, adjust minimally, retest, and keep player-made tipping out of official play.
