How much badminton players actually sweat
Real match data puts badminton sweat rates around 1 L per hour for most singles players, with wide variation between individuals. In one study of elite players, men lost 1.14 L/h and women 1.02 L/h on average, and two-thirds of players finished a match under 1% of their body mass, well short of anything that hurts performance.
That figure comes from testing of Spain's national badminton squad in club-style hall conditions: 24±3°C and 50±6% relative humidity, close to a typical indoor gym rather than a lab. A study of elite badminton players' sweat and fluid balance found two-thirds of players lost under 1% of body mass, 12% lost more than 1%, and just one of those players crossed 2%, the point where physical performance and safety both start to matter.
Your own number needs only figures you already have access to: your weight before play, your weight after, and whatever you drank in between. Say you weigh 76.4 kg before a 75-minute session and 75.6 kg after it, having drunk 500 mL along the way. You lost 0.8 kg on the scale, but you also put 0.5 L back in, so your real fluid loss for the session was 1.3 L. Divide by 1.25 hours and your sweat rate comes out close to 1.0 L/h, right in line with the elite singles average above.
For context, NATA's fluid-replacement position statement puts adult exercise sweat rates anywhere from 0.5 to 4.0 L/h depending on body size, heat and effort, and treats anything above 2.5 L/h as genuinely high. A player training hard in a stuffy summer hall can land well above the elite singles average measured above; a relaxed doubles game in a cool hall can land well below it. That range is exactly why your own number matters more than someone else's.
Turn your number into a during-play drinking plan
Badminton already builds drinking windows into its rules: a short break every time a game reaches 11 points, and a longer one between games. Divide your hourly sweat rate across the breaks in a typical hour of play and you get a concrete sip target, not a vague reminder to stay hydrated.
Under the current BWF Laws of Badminton, play stops for up to 60 seconds each time the leading score first reaches 11 points in a game, and for up to 120 seconds between the first and second games and between the second and third. Those intervals exist for recovery and coaching, but they also work as fixed, repeatable drinking windows built into every match you play.
If your measured rate is close to 1 L/h, a realistic target is 150-200 mL at each 11-point break and closer to 250-300 mL when a between-game interval falls in the same stretch. A player with a higher rate, say 1.5 L/h, should push toward the top of that range and take a proper drink before the first serve so the match does not start with a deficit already in place. This is arithmetic on your own number, not a separate clinical target, so treat the table below as a starting split to adjust once you see how a real match actually feels.

General sports-science guidance suggests roughly 200 mL every 15 to 20 minutes as a target for exercise generally, while noting that timing is hard to hold in sports with long, unpredictable gaps between breaks. Badminton removes that problem for you. You already know when the breaks are coming, so the plan can be built around them instead of a clock.
For a multi-match day, add up total playing time rather than guessing at a bottle count. Three matches at roughly 40-45 minutes each is about two hours of court time; at a 1 L/h rate, that is close to 2 L across the day, on top of whatever you drink between matches while your heart rate settles. Two ways to get the plan wrong
Players get hydration wrong in two opposite directions: drinking too little and drinking too much. Both cost more than a few sips would ever fix, and both are avoidable once you know your own sweat rate instead of guessing at it mid-match.
Under-drinking is the more common mistake, and it bites earlier than most players expect. According to NATA's fluid-replacement position statement, a body-mass loss above roughly 1% can already blunt reaction time, short-term memory and decision-making, while noticeable thirst usually does not appear until closer to 2%. By the time you feel thirsty, your first-step speed and shot selection have often already slipped. That gap is the whole argument for playing to a schedule instead of a feeling.
Over-drinking is rarer among club players, but it is easy to spot once you know the sign: if your body weight after a session is higher than before it, you drank past what you sweated. NATA's fluid-balance recommendations keep the fix simple: do not take in more than a session actually costs you, and treat weight gain during play as a signal to ease off at the next interval.
None of this argues for an electrolyte product. Sweat carries sodium and potassium, and for most club sessions ordinary food replaces it without any supplement: AIS electrolyte guidance notes a salty meal such as bread, cheese and crackers can supply roughly the sodium content of a litre of oral rehydration solution. Even Australia's own institute of sport is candid that there is no settled evidence on whether sodium replacement during exercise helps performance or health for most athletes. Why your number beats a fixed bottle rule
A single bottle rule fails because conditions swing more than players assume: a dry, overheated winter hall and a stuffy, un-air-conditioned summer gym can produce very different sweat rates from the same player on the same court. Measuring again when conditions change keeps a plan accurate; a number measured once in the spring and trusted all year will not.
Sports-science guidance backs that up directly: fluid needs vary by body size, environment, exercise intensity and heat acclimatisation, so recommendations should come from a player's own data rather than a population average or a training partner's routine. Treat the elite figures earlier in this guide as a general reference point; your own measurement is what should set the actual plan.
Hall conditions do a lot of that work quietly. A heated hall in the middle of winter often runs drier than a summer gym with no air conditioning, and dry air changes how sweat evaporates off your skin even when the room feels comfortable to stand in. The practical result is the same either way: measure on a night that resembles how you actually train, and update the number when the season or the venue changes.
