Badminton Contact Point: Five Ways Players Get It Wrong

A weak overhead almost always traces back to where you contacted the shuttle relative to your body. Five faults cover nearly every case: too far to your racket side, too far to your non-racket side, too far in front, too far behind, or simply too low. Each one produces a different shuttle result and points to a different fix.

Start with Contact too far to your racket side

Work through the five faults in order, or jump straight to whichever one matches what your last ten overheads actually did. Each section lists the shuttle result, what it sounds and feels like, and whether footwork, timing, or shoulder rotation is the real cause.

Coaching guidance on the overhead stroke describes correct contact in simple terms: racket arm fully extended, contact as high as you can reach, and slightly in front of your body, which is what lets you control whether the shuttle flies down, flat, or up. Contact too far to your racket side

This fault means the racket meets the shuttle wide of your racket-side shoulder instead of in front of your body, usually because the forearm and wrist rotate through impact too early. The shuttle typically slices sideways or clips off the frame, and the stroke feels like a flick rather than a clean strike.

  • Shuttle result: a smash or clear that goes out the side, catches the net-post area, or loses pace mid-flight because the strings met the shuttle at an angle instead of square-on.
  • Feel and sound: a thin, clicking contact instead of a solid pop, and the racket head feels like it arrived before your body did.
  • Likely cause: the wrist and forearm snap shut before the shuttle gets there, usually from anticipating the hit rather than reacting to it.

This is a timing fault more than a footwork fault. You can be perfectly positioned under the shuttle and still hit it wide of your racket shoulder if the forearm pronation and wrist flexion that should snap through at contact fire a fraction early instead. Ten shadow swings with no shuttle, pausing at the moment you would normally strike, will show you whether your racket face is still square at that point or has already started to close.


Contact too far to your non-racket side

This fault happens when you reach across your own body instead of turning side-on, so the racket meets the shuttle closer to your non-racket shoulder than your racket shoulder. The shot loses depth and power because your arm is cramped and your shoulder cannot rotate through the swing.

  • Shuttle result: a short, floaty reply that sits up for your opponent to attack, even when you swung as hard as you could.
  • Feel and sound: a cramped, elbow-led swing with a dull thud instead of a crack, and you finish facing the net rather than side-on.
  • Likely cause: footwork that never gets your body side-on to the shuttle, so your arm reaches to compensate for a turn your feet skipped.

Unlike the racket-side fault, this one is footwork first. If you are consistently reaching across your body to take a forehand overhead from your backhand corner, the fix is rarely arm technique. It is the split step, pivot, and turn that should get your racket shoulder pointing at the shuttle before you swing. Contact too far in front of your body

This fault means you meet the shuttle earlier in your swing than the stroke needs, before your wrist and elbow have reached their fastest point of the whip. The contact still looks forward and high, but the shot comes off as a push or a slap instead of a strike.

  • Shuttle result: a clear that falls short of the back line, or a smash that lands soft and shallow even though your positioning looked textbook.
  • Feel and sound: a muted, flat contact with almost no vibration in the frame, closer to patting the shuttle than hitting it.
  • Likely cause: rushing the swing so the racket meets the shuttle before your wrist flexion and elbow extension reach their peak speed.

Peer-reviewed motion analysis of the smash found that maximum shuttle speed depends on meeting the shuttle at the instant your wrist and elbow hit their fastest angular acceleration, not simply on reaching forward. That study also found skilled players used more trunk rotation and a longer wrist and elbow range of motion than novices, which gives the whip more distance to build speed before it arrives at the shuttle. If you are meeting the shuttle early in your own swing, you are cutting that whip short, and the fix is to let your preparation finish before your arm fires rather than reaching further forward.


Contact too far behind your body

This fault means the shuttle has already drifted behind your head or shoulder by the time you make contact, almost always because you arrived at the base position late. Instead of striking down and forward, you end up pushing the shuttle up and back, turning an attacking chance into a defensive lift.

  • Shuttle result: a weak, looping lift that sits up in the midcourt instead of a clear or a smash, no matter how hard you swing.
  • Feel and sound: your body leaning backward or off balance at contact, with a soft scoop instead of a downward crack.
  • Likely cause: a late split step or a slow first move, so the shuttle beats your feet to the corner.

This is almost always a footwork problem wearing an arm-technique costume. Once the shuttle falls past your ideal contact point, no amount of wrist speed puts it back in front of you. The real fix happens earlier, well before the swing itself: it lives in the split step and the first two steps toward the corner. Contact too low

This fault means your racket meets the shuttle below your ideal reach, usually around shoulder height or lower, because your legs never loaded to lift your contact point. A shot that should have been a clear or a smash comes off flat or has to go up instead of down.

  • Shuttle result: a lift or a flat clear that gives your opponent time to attack, instead of the downward reply the situation allowed.
  • Feel and sound: flat feet at contact, straight knees, and a swing that feels arm-only with no push from the ground up.
  • Likely cause: standing flat-footed under the shuttle instead of loading your legs, often from fatigue or from not tracking the shuttle early enough to prepare.

BWF coach education material frames this in terms of "early": the higher and closer to the net you strike the shuttle, the more often you are in an attacking situation, with more chances to hit down into your opponent's court and more stroke options available. Drop that contact point low enough and those options fall away; a full-length clear becomes a lift because you no longer have the angle to send the shuttle down. Run a two-minute contact-point self-check

You do not need a coach in the room to find out which of these five faults is yours tonight. Run through this before your next few sessions and note which fault keeps repeating.

  1. Shadow ten overhead swings with no shuttle, pausing at the exact point you would normally strike, and check whether your arm is extended, high, and slightly in front, or already collapsing to one side.
  2. Have a partner feed ten high serves to your rear court and film one side-on angle. Watch the footage back for where your racket actually meets the shuttle, not where it felt like it did.
  3. Stand an arm's length from a wall and swing to just brush it at your intended contact point. If you have to stretch, lean, or duck to reach that spot, your footwork is putting you in the wrong place before the swing even starts.
  4. Write down which fault showed up most often. Fix one fault at a time; chasing all five in the same session usually fixes none of them.
