Badminton Movement Patterns: Front, Rear and Side Counts

Quick answer

A small analysis of three elite men’s singles matches reported an average of 114 forward, 109 rearward and 44 sideways coded movements per player-match. Forward plus rearward equals 223, about 5.1 times the sideways count.

That is a description of six observations involving four players under one coding method. It is not a universal match total, a step count or evidence that everyone should train front-and-back movement for five times as many minutes as lateral movement.

Movement-count headlines become useful only after you know what was counted. In this case, the sample can show a pattern inside three particular matches. It cannot prescribe your practice by itself. Your event, opponents, habits and errors may create a different problem.

Use the published numbers as a worked example, then audit one recorded game of your own with fixed definitions. Frequency tells you where you spend time. Late arrival, lost balance and slow recovery show where movement quality is breaking down.

Where the 114, 109 and 44 movement counts came from

The figures come from a 2019 descriptive analysis of men’s singles footwork at the 2018 Asian Games. The researchers used video from the two semifinals and final. Each player in each match produced one row, giving six player-match observations.

Those six rows do not represent six different people. Jonatan Christie and Chou Tien Chen each appeared twice, while Kenta Nishimoto and Anthony Ginting appeared once. The sample therefore involved four distinct players across three matches.

The paper also reported mean rally and rest times of 10.97 and 23.51 seconds. Keep those measures separate from movement counts. The analysis did not convert its coded events into steps, metres travelled, intensity, mechanical load or a cause of fatigue.


What the 5.1-to-1 ratio means—and what it does not

The arithmetic is straightforward: 114 forward plus 109 rearward equals 223. Divide 223 by 44 sideways movements and the result is about 5.1. Within this sample and coding scheme, the combined longitudinal count was therefore about 5.1 times the lateral count.

The calculation does not show that five practice minutes should go to forward and rearward work for every one lateral minute. Training time depends on more than event frequency:

  • Technical need: a less frequent movement may still be your largest weakness.
  • Repeated breakdown: a less frequent movement may still deserve attention if it repeatedly produces late contact, lost balance or slow recovery.
  • Intensity: two coded events can demand very different braking and recovery effort.
  • Event: singles and doubles create different spacing, partners and shot chains.
  • Training history: the direction you already practise well may need maintenance rather than more volume.

A larger 18-match World Championship movement study used different directional categories and found distributions changed with game, round and match status. That does not invalidate the smaller sample. It shows why its ratio belongs to its definitions and context.

Do not turn frequency into importance. Rearward and forward counts were close—109 and 114. The study did not test whether one direction produces better training gains or deserves priority.


Count your own badminton movement patterns

One recorded game is not a scientific profile, but it can answer a practical coaching question: which movements appear often, and which ones break down? Use the same definitions from start to finish so your count stays internally consistent.

  1. Choose one complete game. Do not select only your best rallies or remove points that felt awkward.
  2. Define three directions. Mark movement toward the net as forward, toward the rear boundary as rearward and mainly across court as sideways. When a path is diagonal, choose the dominant direction and keep that rule.
  3. Count one response to one opponent shot. Do not count every individual step unless you are running a different step-count project.
  4. Add an error mark. Beside the direction, note late contact, balance loss, an extra correction step or slow recovery to a useful position.
  5. Total frequency and errors separately. A common direction with few errors may be a strength. A less common direction with repeated failures may be the first practice target.
  6. Repeat later with the same definitions. Compare like with like rather than chasing an elite number.

Turn the audit into a practice emphasis

Choose practice by combining frequency with repeated breakdowns. A simple decision grid works better than copying the study’s ratio:

Why doubles needs a new count

Do not transfer the 5.1-to-1 singles arithmetic to doubles. A partner changes the space each player covers, and the discipline changes rally timing, shot frequency, lunging and jumping demands. A small European Championship match analysis found discipline-specific differences, but it did not validate one universal front/rear/side ratio for doubles.

If you mostly play doubles, record a doubles game and add two useful labels to your directional count: whether you were attacking or defending, and whether a partner rotation changed your path. That produces a ratio from your event instead of borrowing one from elite men’s singles.

Use published counts as a question, not a quota.

The useful pattern is the one that connects your repeated movement to your repeated error—then changes when the evidence from your own game changes.
